MUSCATINE– One week after the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls made history with their first ever state tournament appearance, the varsity boys basketball team followed them to the Wells Fargo Arena, in Des Moines, with their own state tourney appearance, the first for the boys since 1993.
The Creek Boys knocked off Davenport Assumption, 79-66, in a Class 3A substate final at Muscatine High School on Wednesday, March 4, to advance to Des Moines. The Clippers were locked in a 19-19 tie with the Knights at the end of the first quarter and trailed, 40-34, at halftime before inching ahead in the third to a 55-53 lead.
Christian Withrow led CCA’s attack with 26 points as four Clippers scored in double-digits. Mike Potter put up 20, Tyler Schrepfer added 16 (including a trio of three-point baskets), and T.J. Bollers contributed 10.
The Clippers opened State 3A competition in the quarterfinals by taking on No. 2 seed, and WaMaC East foe, Mount Vernon (22-2 record) on Tuesday, March 10 (after this edition’s deadline) as the No. 7 seed (19-5). It was the third state tournament for the CCA boys since back-to-back appearances in 1992 and 1993. The 3A semifinals are set for Thursday, March 12, with the championship game on Friday, March 13, at 6:35 p.m. If the Creek Boys fall into the consolation bracket, the game is set for Friday, March 13, at 10:20 a.m.
Withrow, Schrepfer, Bollers and Nick O’Connor were named to the 2019-2020 WaMaC West All-Conference First Team.
