Creek Boys end the season with win over Sabers

CCA holds off Central DeWitt for 35-21 win on Senior Night

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity football team closed out the 2019 season with a 35-21 win over the Sabers of Central Clinton, DeWitt at home on Friday, Oct. 25. It was Senior Night for the Clippers with Kaden Gisleson, Andrew Swails, Nick Gerard, Sam Stevens, J.J. Denny, Grant Jensen, Andrew King, Sam Noska, Zane Cunningham, Tanner Webb, Xavi Hernandez, Thomas Macumber, Kyle Pitlick, Eric Zierke, Landon Schanz, Grant Haman, Lucas Tenhagen and Gabe Jenn recognized for their contributions to the program.
The Creek Boys took the opening kick off, and quickly moved up the field. Alex “Fig” Figueroa ended the drive with a touchdown and a 6-0 lead with 9:20 left in the first quarter. J.J. Denny put the exclamation point on it with a successful point-after kick, and the Clippers went up 7-0.
The Sabers threatened to score, but Tom Johnson snagged a DeWitt pass headed for the end zone, giving the Clippers first down and 10 to go from their own one-yard line. The quarter ended with the Clippers in possession on their own 38-yard line, but the Saber defense halted the drive, and with 7:36 left in the first half, DeWitt scored to tie the game at 7-7. Ryan Navara connected with Sam Stevens on a 46-yard pass reception for CCA’s second touchdown of the night with 1:32 left in the half. Again, Denny put up a good kick, and the Clippers were ahead 14-7. Figueroa struck again with 37 seconds left before halftime with a quick dash over the goal line. With Denny’s kick, the “Boats” took a 21-7 lead into the break.
The Clippers opened the second half with Figueroa’s third score of the night as Navara handed off to the junior, who dashed in for a 27-7 advantage with 11:01 remaining in the third quarter. Denny again hit pay dirt as the ball sailed through the uprights for the extra point and a 28-7 lead. Navara hit Gage Freeman with a 23-yard pass reception for a touchdown, and a 34-7 lead with 5:06 left in the period. Denny nailed the point-after kick, and CCA enjoyed a 35-7 advantage.
Kaden Gisleson picked off another Saber pass to the end zone, and scampered 10 yards with it before he was brought down with 11:49 left in the ballgame.
The Sabers refused to quietly into the night and put up two touchdowns in the final minutes of the contest, but the Boats held on for the win.
Navara completed 18 of 25 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns with Stevens taking four receptions 95 yards, and Johnson going 57 yards with three receptions. Figueroa covered 94 yards on 22 carries to lead the ground war. Gisleson made four solo tackles and three assists for 5-1/2 tackles on the night while Stevens made three solo and four assists for five total.
The Clippers finished the season at 5-4 overall, tied with Davenport Assumption, but only went 2-3 in Class 3A District No. 5 to fall behind district champion North Scott (5-0), runner-up Liberty High (4-1), and Assumption (3-2).
