Creek Boys earn first WaMaC XC title

Barker, O’Connor and Sexton finish 2, 3, 4 for CCA

MANCHESTER– The No. 1-ranked Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys cross country team picked up its first WaMaC Conference championship Thursday, Oct. 17, at the Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester. The Clippers topped the field with 30 points, followed by runner-up Center Point-Urbana (CPU) with 65.
The Creek Boys placed four runners in the top 10, led by junior Brandon Barker. Barker came in second roughly five seconds behind Champion Eli Larson from CPU. Nick O’Connor was third in 16:33.80, Jack Sexton was fourth in 16:40.40, and Gavin Zillyette was eighth in 16:56.90.
The Iowa Association of Track Coaches ranked the Clippers at the top of Class 3A in its Thursday, Oct. 17, weekly rankings.
The junior varsity (JV) boys were second behind champion Mount Vernon, which topped the Clippers 41-50. Shiloh Robbins led CCA with a third-place finish in 17:50.10. Michael Potter put up an eighth-place finish in 18:24.40.
CCA’s varsity girls were seventh with Williamsburg taking the team title, followed by runner-up Solon. Haidyn Barker led the Creek Girls with her third-place finish in 19:34.10 behind champion Adrianna Katcher from CPU (18:48.50), and Williamsburg’s Grace Schaefer (19:33.50).
Lauren Lasswell was CCA’s only JV entry, finishing 18th in 23:37.40.
The Clippers compete in a Class 3A state qualifying meet on Thursday, Oct. 24, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. The varsity boys qualified for the 2018 state meet and returned with their first runner-up trophy in program history.
The 2019 state meet is set for Saturday, Nov. 2, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge, with 3A girls running at noon followed by the 3A boys at 12:30 p.m.
