Cougars leave Women of Troy winless

CR Kennedy defeats West, 4-1

IOWA CITY– The Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars left the Iowa City West High Women of Troy looking for their first win of the season after defeating West, 4-1, Tuesday, April 17, at West High’s Ed Barker Soccer Complex, as the first half of a girls/boys varsity doubleheader.
Junior Rachel Olson scored West’s only goal with an assist from Kennedy Hochstedler (also a junior), while Julia Bernat, a freshman, made 17 saves and allowed four goals through 80 minutes of play.
After the match, Jason Eslinger and Lisa Brinkmeyer, from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, presented long-time West High Coach David Rosenthal a plaque to celebrate his selection as the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.
The NFHS announced Rosenthal was one of 23 coaches from across the country as the recipient in January. A native of Waterville, Maine, Rosenthal has been at West High for 24 years, and, coaching the Women of Troy for 23 years, starting as an assistant coach for one year before taking the helm. West has won two state championships (2004, 2015) under Rosenthal.
West travels to Lower Kingston, in Cedar Rapids, to face Cedar Rapids Jefferson on Tuesday, April 24, at 4:15 p.m. and travels to Cedar Falls on Thursday, April 26, for a 6:45 p.m. match. Cedar Rapids Prairie visits Barker Field on Tuesday, May 1, at 6:45 p.m.
