IOWA CITY– A pair of decisive wins led to a pair of painful losses for the West High Women of Troy. After knocking off Bettendorf 63-35 and Waterloo East 61-18, coach BJ Mayer’s crew fell 60-51 at Valley High School in West Des Moines and struggled against the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars at home.
West met Kennedy last Tuesday, Jan. 28, and while the home team was able to go toe-to-toe with the ranked Cougars, in the end the Women of Troy fell, 40-33. While rebounds and turnovers frustrated the West High effort, it was the shooting that made the difference with West’s squad only hitting 11 of 45 field goals to the Cougars’ 16 of 34.
West took an 11-10 lead at the end of the first period thanks to Mikaela Morgan, Emily Halverson and Grace Tafolla hitting field goals, and Jessie Harder nailing a 3-pointer. Tafolla nailed a 3-bomb in the second quarter, the first of three for the junior. West was ahead as the half was ending, but a pair of Kennedy baskets in the final minute pushed the Cougars ahead, 20-17.
Three-pointers by Tafolla and Morgan gave West a lift in the third period but the Cougars advanced to lead, 34-28. Tafolla and Jessie Harder scored West’s only baskets in the final eight minutes: a 3-point shot for Tafolla and a lay-up off of a steal for Harder, while the Cougars went on a six-point run.
West is on the road Friday, Feb. 7, at Waterloo East and will take on undefeated and top-ranked (as-of this writing) City High in a men’s/women’s doubleheader at home on Tuesday, Feb. 11. The regular season wraps up on Friday, Feb. 14, as the ladies travel to Cedar Rapids Xavier.

Notes from the scoring table:
Grace Tafolla led West High with 13 points, Mikaela Morgan had 10, Jessie Harder and Emily Halverson scored five points each. Tafolla had a trio of 3-point shots, Harder sank one. Halverson had the best luck at the free throw line, sinking three of six attempted while the Women of Troy made five of nine in total.
West High out-rebounded Kennedy, 27-24. Morgan had more boards than anybody with 10 for the night.
Paige Hendrickson led Kennedy with 15 points.
Kennedy was the seventh-ranked team in Class 5A, but dropped out of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s weekly rankings issued on Thursday, Jan. 30.
