Class of 2020 to have its day

July 19 ceremony to be held at Spartan Stadium Inclement weather could curtail attendance

SOLON– Parents, family members and friends will be able to spread out at Spartan Stadium to safely celebrate the graduating Solon High School (SHS) Class of 2020 Sunday, July 19.
But if the weather doesn’t cooperate, things change.
According to SHS Principal Zach Wigle, if the ceremony is forced inside, the district will utilize the high school auditorium, and that will limit the number of guests for each graduate.
“We’re not going to be able to move it into the gym, because all of the stage and all of the chairs are going to be outside at the stadium,” Wigle explained in a June 29 YouTube update.
“What that means for you then is only two people from each family will be allowed to actually be in the auditorium for the ceremony,” he told seniors.
The restriction would allow attendees to social distance as best as possible inside, he noted.
A virtual ceremony will be also be released at the same time, he said, and the district will be recording the inside ceremony if needed, for release at a later date.
Based on feedback from students and parents, the Solon Community School District Board of Education approved two graduation ceremonies for 2020 seniors impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic at a special meeting May 7.
A drive-through event was held on the original graduation date, Sunday, May 17, at the SHS parking lot, with each senior assigned a parking space. Parents and community members drove down Racine Avenue from the Solon Recreation and Nature Area past poster-size senior photos in the right-of-way and paraded through the parking lot past the graduates.
A second, traditional graduation ceremony, is set for Sunday, July 19, at 2 p.m.
The practice will be held at Spartan Stadium Friday, July 17, at 11 a.m., and seniors are asked to report Sunday by 1 p.m. for the 2 p.m. ceremony.
“I’m thinking it’s going to be a great Sunday,” Wigle said in his YouTube update. “It’s probably going to be 85 degrees with 90 percent humidity, so we’ll sweat a whole bunch but it’s going to be a great celebration to finalize this class of 2020.”
