Change in direction

CCA’s Cheyaenne Bunch charts a new college course
CCA senior Cheyanne Bunch serves for the Clippers during the 2019 season. Bunch changed her collegiate plans from Concordia University, in Seward, Neb., to Kirkwood Community College.

HOMESTEAD– She’ll get to keep blue and white in her wardrobe.
Clear Creek Amana High School (CCA) senior Cheyaenne Bunch changed her college plans, opting to remain closer to home. Bunch initially signed a letter of intent to play volleyball with Concordia University, in Seward, Neb., back in November. Concordia is a Lutheran college in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Great Plains Athletic Conference and the Bulldogs went 23-6 last season.
However, on Friday, June 12, Bunch announced she set a new course for Kirkwood Community College, in Cedar Rapids, the home of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Eagles.
“I was originally committed to Concordia. However, with COVID-19 throwing a wrench in my plans, I decided Kirkwood would be a great, if not better, school for me to attend,” Bunch commented via messaging. “Sometimes things happen for a reason and I believe this is one of those times. The Kirkwood coaching staff has been extremely supportive and welcoming to me, as well.”
Kirkwood, she said, was her top pick when she decided to look at Iowa schools.
“I reached out to them and it was immediately a perfect fit. Both of my sisters attended Kirkwood, so I knew it’d be a great fit for me and it’s still close enough to home so I can watch my little sister grow up.”
The recently graduated senior was a unanimous WaMaC West First Team pick last season, playing in 96 sets and producing 799 assists and 218 digs. Bunch also made 21 block assists and recorded one solo block for Coach Jackie Clubb and her fellow Clippers.
She’ll major in exercise science and pursue a coaching certification while at Kirkwood, and plans to finish her bachelor’s degree with an eye toward graduate school and ultimately working as an athletic trainer.
“I loved my time as a Clipper,” she said. “If it wasn’t for CCA, I would’ve never got to meet some of my best friends or got to play with some amazing teams. Some of my favorite memories are being able to play volleyball with and against my best friends, having such a supportive community whether it be in sports or academics, and getting to have a very unique send off as a senior this year.”
She gave a special shout out to her volleyball and softball coaches for always believing in her and pushing her to be her absolute best.
“I wouldn’t be where I was today without them,” she noted. “In particular, Lauren Hansen has been my setting coach, as well as my recruiter, and has been amazing to work with. I’ve learned so much from her.”
