Cedar Rapids man charged with attempted murder

NORTH LIBERTY– On Thursday afternoon, June 29, at 12:14 p.m., the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call from a man reporting he had been stabbed multiple times. At the time of the call, he did not know where he was located. 911 mapping was utilized to pinpoint the area north of Kent Park.
The victim was located a short time later in the Hawkeye Wildlife area, near the intersection of Swan Lake Rd and Greencastle Ave.
The victim suffered four stab wounds to his back. He also reported the offender attempted to run him over with his pickup truck and fired multiple rounds at him from a semi-automatic pistol. The victim knew his assailant and provided a name and physical description, as well as a description of the truck. The victim was transported to the University of Iowa Emergency Treatment Center for his injuries. The injuries were non-life threatening.
Later that day an arrest warrant was issued for the offender, Ronald Gene Gonterman, 66, of 1429 Bever Ave. SE, in Cedar Rapids. He was arrested at his home by the Cedar Rapids Police Department a short time later. He was transported to the Johnson County Jail and charged with attempted murder.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the North Liberty Police Department, Cedar Rapids Police Department, Iowa DNR, Johnson County Ambulance and the Oxford First Responders. The case remains under investigation.
