Cardinals sweep Lady Spartans

Solon rebounds against Iowa City West, Ft. Madison
Solon senior Katie Yi goes up trying to drive one past the Cardinals' defense during the Lady Spartans' loss, 25-21, in the first game at Maquoketa on Tuesday, Sept. 24. Solon dropped the other two games, 25-17 and 25-20.

MAQUOKETA– Despite an active back row, some pretty stellar serving and 13 kills from senior Katie Yi, Solon’s varsity volleyball team came up empty against the Maquoketa Cardinals.
The Cardinals swept the Lady Spartans 3-0 in a WaMaC Conference East matchup Sept. 24 in Maquoketa.
“Maquoketa did a good job of moving the ball around, they played a complete game,” Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin said. “We had moments, but ultimately, we couldn't finish, having a lead by five points and then losing the set just can't happen. We saw some things that needed attention on defense and offense and hope to get better from there.”
The Lady Spartans hung tough in all three games, losing 25-21, 25-17 and 25-20.
“It was a good battle but we never really maintained any control, we played a chaotic match and it showed,” Ferin noted.
Solon had 24 kills on 117 attempts, with 13 from Yi and five from freshman Delaney Bombei. Freshman Kylee Fleck had 23 assists, 14 digs and was 16-16 from the service stripe with three of the team’s five aces. The Lady Spartans were 56-59 from the service line, thanks in part to a 17-17 (one ace) showing from sophomore Camryn Keith.
Solon rebounded over the weekend with a 3-2 showing at a Liberty High School tournament in North Liberty.
The Lady Spartans defeated Iowa City West and Fort Madison (twice) but fell to Clinton and host Liberty, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A.
“We played Tuesday night with two players being sick, one was Katie Yi who continued being sick over the weekend and did not come to the tournament at Liberty” Ferin reported. “We are moving players around and trying to figure out the best rotations. We have the talent and ability to play with these teams we just need to get the confidence and this weekend without Katie some of our other players had the opportunity to shine and they did well.”
Solon took a 2-1 win from West High, bolstered by seven kills and four blocks from Delaney Bombei.
“Delaney Bombei has really shown up big for us and continues to do so– this weekend she posted good hitting numbers and blocks,” Ferin noted. “Camryn Keith got the opportunity to shine in the middle for us and did well, had more swings on the ball and we moved Jane Willms to the outside to help on offense and she came up big for us out there. We are getting a lot of players on the board hitting and improving our serving so that helps us on offense tremendously.”
Willms had six kills for the Lady Spartans against West High, while Keith and senior Miranda McHugh each added five. Solon notched 28 kills on 65 attempts.
Flynn had 21 assists, 10 digs, and four aces (13-15) to lead the team. Senior Brookelyn Whitford was 7-9 from the service line with three aces, while junior Peyton Moore was 13-14 with two aces.
Solon took the first game against Clinton, 21-15, but the River Queens rebounded for the next two (21-13, 15-11) and the match.
Senior Emma Harris and Delaney Bombei each had five kills, while Willms added four. Flynn was again busy with 17 assists, 11 digs and two aces.
Junior Sydney Langenberg added 13 digs and was 7-7 at the service stripe with three aces.
The Lady Spartans had an easier time against Fort Madison, winning once in pool play and once in bracket play, both by 2-0 scores. Solon had 15 aces in the two matches. Delaney Bombei and Willms each collected 14 kills total in the two meetings.
The sledding was tough against the host Lightning.
Liberty rolled past the Lady Spartans, 2-0 (21-10, 21-6), with Solon managing only four kills and 18 serves.
Coach Ferin said the team would continue working on its defense and serve receive to match up against some big teams in the next two weeks.
After hosting No. 3 (2A) Dyersville Beckman Oct. 1, the Lady Spartans travel to Manchester to face No. 5 (4A) West Delaware Thursday, Oct. 3, and host Marion Tuesday, Oct. 8.
“We are looking forward to the battles and hope to surprise some teams,” Ferin added.
