Calendar committee established; lunch prices to increase

SOLON– It’s official.
Solon’s school calendar will be developed by a new committee that looks a lot like the old one, but with one major difference.
School board members will be on board.
At its June 2 meeting, members of the Solon Community School District Board of Education approved the recommended members a new calendar committee.
The new committee becomes a formal part of the school government, established as one of (now) four official board committees, joining the School Improvement Advisory Committee (SIAC), the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP) and the Governance Committee.
The change came subsequent to the school board’s approval of a 2014-2015 school calendar in February which aligned the end of the first semester with winter break and placed high school graduation on Sunday, May 17, 2015.
The action reversed a decision made the previous April, when the school board approved a start date of Aug. 20 for both the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 school years.
The following month, committee members expressed frustration with the process, prompting the district to begin an overhaul which would include more of a role board members.
Two members of the school board will serve on the 12-person committee, acting as a conduit to provide direction from the full board. Board members Dean Martin and Dan Coons were appointed, along with Activities Director Keith McSweeney representing the district’s administration.
The committee also includes a teacher representative from each attendance center and three parent delegates, as well as a member from support staff and two at-large positions.
Those appointed to the committee included Lori Grimoskas, Teresa Burg, Karry Putzy, Erin Hale, Jen Ferguson, Sheila Barron, Heather Pentico, Brandi Radcliffe and Tom Altman.
The committee appointments were approved unanimously.
Board members also gave approval to an increase in student lunch prices for the 2014-2015 school year.
The cost for student lunches at all three school buildings will increase by 10 cents, to $2.45 at Lakeview Elementary and Solon Middle School, and to $2.60 at Solon High School.
The increases were presented as part of an overall package of registration fees for the upcoming school year.
“Our nutrition fund is something we’re trying to stay ahead of. Expenses continue to rise,” Superintendent Sam Miller noted at the May 12 meeting of the board.
“We’re hopeful that a dime will prevent us from having to come back next year and ask for more,” he said, noting the board has expressed a preference for staying away from annual increases.
Miller said the price change would generate around $10,000 per year for the nutrition program, if usage remains consistent.
It was the only increase noted in the package of enrollment fees, which include the cost for activity tickets, driver education and before-and-after school (BASP) services.
