CEDAR RAPIDS– The 2017-18 varsity boys basketball season opened for Liberty High and Iowa City West High with scrimmages in Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s Jamboree on Monday, Nov. 20.
Stu Ordman and the Lightning Bolts flashed past the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors, 29-27, with a 3-point shot at the final buzzer courtesy of Isaac Bender. The Bolts led, 11-10, at the end of the first quarter (only one half/two quarters were played in the Jamboree format). The Lightning lead slipped away in the second quarter as the Warriors went up, 20-19. An Andre Brandon free throw tied the game at 20, but a series of Lightning fouls resulted in five Warrior points from the charity stripe and a 25-24 lead for Washington. Bender was fouled with 10.8 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to give the Bolts a 26-25 edge. The Warriors went to the line with 4.7 seconds left for two free throws and a 27-26 advantage. Bender launched from roughly mid-court in the final second and bombed the bucket as time ran out for the win.
Bender and Brandon led the Bolts with eight points apiece, Ben Houselog produced seven points, Ethan O’Donnell contributed four and Sam Funke chipped in two points.
The Lightning host Waterloo West on Friday, Dec. 1, and travel to Mount Pleasant on Tuesday, Dec. 5, before receiving the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana on Saturday, Dec. 9. All three games have a 7:30 p.m. varsity start time.
Steve Bergman and the Iowa City West High Trojans tied, 37-37, with the host Kennedy Cougars, as Patrick McCaffery nailed a 3-point shot with less than 10 seconds remaining on the clock when West High trailed, 37-34.
The Trojans led 17-15 at the end of the first quarter after an early 9-3 lead. The Cougars took the lead in the second quarter with a 20-19 advantage and capitalized on Trojan fouls to build a 29-21 advantage. Bergie’s boys battled back late in the period to come within three points before McCaffery’s tying long bomb. Kennedy put up a shot at the buzzer, similar to Bender’s earlier effort, but missed ending the game in a tie.
Seybian Sims led the Trojans with a dozen points, while McCaffery added 11 with one 3-pointer. Hakeem Odunsi produced five points for West.
The Trojans host West Des Moines Dowling Catholic on Thursday, Nov. 30, with a 7 p.m. start, and travel to Minnetonka, Minn. on Saturday, Dec. 2, to take on Minneapolis DeLaSalle at 3:45 p.m. in the Hopkins-Lindbergh Center. West High visits Dubuque Hempstead Catholic on Friday, Dec. 8, with a 7:30 p.m. start.
