Bolts take one on the chin against Prairie Hawks

CEDAR RAPIDS– 24 hours after topping Iowa City High, the Liberty High Lightning were in action at Cedar Rapids Prairie against the 12-5 Prairie Hawks, and fell, 63-54, to dip to 9-9 on the season.
Prairie took a 13-7 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 26-17 at halftime despite second period 3-point baskets by Ira Hazeltine and Savion Taylor. The Bolts turned to the three-point shot in the third with three in a row, but the Hawks flew away to a comfortable 42-28 advantage. Liberty rallied in the fourth with three-bombs from Hazeltine, Kelby Telander, Ben Houselog and Grayson Tyler, but just couldn’t close the gap.
Hazeltine led Liberty with 12 points, all from three-point range, while Taylor produced ten points with a trio of three-pointers. Prairie had three men in double digits, led by Jonathan Mullins with 14.
The regular season ends on Thursday, Feb. 20, at Dubuque Senior with a 7:30 p.m. varsity start.
The Bolts are in Class 4A Substate No. 4 with Cedar Falls, Clinton, Dubuque Hempstead, Western Dubuque and Linn-Mar. Postseason competition begins with opening round games on Monday, Feb. 24, with the 2020 state tournament set for March 9-13 at Wells Fargo Arena, in Des Moines.
