NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity volleyball team stayed perfect in early season competition with a 3-0 sweep of visiting Iowa City West High Tuesday, Sept. 3. The Lightning, ranked ninth in Class 5A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) for two weeks straight, knocked off unranked West High 25-16, 25-11 and 25-13.
West High kept the game close early in the first set after scoring the first point of the match and led 2-1 before a LeeAnn Potter kill tied the set at 2-2. Cassidy Hartman, a freshman, gave Liberty a 10-8 lead with a kill, which sparked a 5-0 run by the Bolts. Liberty kept up its attack and built a 20-13 lead, prompting West head coach Scott Sanders, former assistant to Liberty head coach Randy Dolson, to take a timeout to regroup his Women of Troy ahead of the 25-16 final.
The Lightning struck six times in the second set before West’s first point, and built a 12-5 lead before another West High timeout. A Hartman kill made it 7-2 for Liberty while an ace serve from Rylee Fay, a senior transfer this year from West, made it 19-7 on the way to the 25-11 set win.
Hartman opened the third set with a kill for a 1-0 lead, a pair of aces from Sydney Woods, a sophomore, made it 5-0, and the Bolts ran up a 7-0 advantage before another West timeout. A Potter kill gave Liberty the 9-3 advantage. Fay put up three ace serves in a row during the set as the Bolts racked up a 21-7 lead ahead of the 25-13 set victory and match win.
Hartman led the Bolts with eight kills and was backed up by Woods with six while freshman Shelby Kimm and Potter contributed five apiece. Fay made 16 assists, Hartman had two blocks, and Woods produced five aces.
Liberty will compete in West High’s Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14, starting at 9 a.m. and travel to Dubuque Wahlert Catholic High School on Tuesday, Sept. 17, for a 7 p.m. varsity match. Linn-Mar visits the Bolts on Tuesday, Sept. 24, for a night of volleyball starting at 5:30 p.m. with sophomore and junior varsity matches, followed by the varsity at 7 p.m.
