Bolts sweep the Trojans

Liberty baseball tops IC West, 5-4 and 8-1

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High varsity baseball team opened the season June 16 with a 2-0 win over Iowa City High, and won bragging rights by sweeping Iowa City West High, 5-4 and 8-1, on Tuesday, June 23, at Liberty High.
The Bolts had a two-run burst in the bottom of the third inning in game one to take a 3-2 lead and, after the Trojans tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth, the Lightning flashed again with a run in the bottom to retake the lead and added an insurance run in the sixth. The Trojans scored one run in the seventh, but Liberty held on for the 5-4 win.
Tyler Dahm smacked a trio of doubles for Liberty and had one RBI, Keian Secrist had one double and Sam Funke had an RBI single. The Bolts put up 10 hits in the contest. Jacob Norris took the win for the Lightning with 4-1/3 innings on the mound and 10 strikeouts. Norris gave up five hits and three runs. Cody Schroeder got the save in 1-2/3 innings, striking out three. Schroeder gave up three hits and one run.
The Bolts blitzed the Trojans with four runs in the bottom of the first inning in the nightcap and added four more in the third, holding West High scoreless until the top of the sixth when they plated one runner.
Norris collected an RBI double, Isaac Bender slapped two singles and drove in one run, Funke had one single and two RBI and Ethan O’Donnell knocked an RBI single. The Bolts had six hits in the contest. O’Donnell took the win with six innings on the mound, striking out four and giving up one run and three hits. Dahm pitched one inning of no-hit ball and struck out one.
The Lightning improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the MVC Valley Division, while the Trojans slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Valley Division.
