Bolts sweep Saints on Senior Night

Liberty High knocks off CR Xavier 2-0 and 4-3
Liberty High’s Kinsley Robertson delivers a pitch in game two of a varsity doubleheader Friday, July 10, at home against Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic. The Lightning swept the Saints 2-0 and 4-3 on Senior Night.

NORTH LIBERTY– Senior Night at Liberty High School was made sweeter by a Lightning softball sweep of the Cedar Rapids Xavier Saints.
Liberty took the varsity doubleheader 2-0 and 4-3 while honoring Ella “Jo-Jo” Johnson and Brylee “BK” Klosterman between games on Friday, July 10.
The Bolts had five hits in game one, but it only took one of those to win the contest as Miranda Jones slammed out a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning, scoring herself and Klosterman. Klosterman had led off for Liberty with a triple. Klosterman, Mischa Reiners and Kinsley Robertson singled for the Lightning. Kara Maiers went the distance in the circle, giving up four hits and striking out 13.
It was almost déjà vu all over again in the bottom of the first inning of game two as Klosterman tripled and Jones drove her home. This time however, Jones didn’t follow “BK” across the dish. Xavier’s first run of the evening came in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 1-1, but the Bolts answered with two in the bottom half. The Saints plated one runner in the top of the fifth, and again Liberty responded with a run in the bottom half to make it 4-2. Xavier’s last threat came in the top of the seventh as one run scored.
The Bolts’ four hits came from Klosterman, Jones, Reiners and Tiffany Jones with a triple for Klosterman and an RBI apiece for Miranda Jones, Raquel Trolliet and Tiffany Jones. Kinsley Robertson pitched 6-1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and three runs with six strikeouts. Maiers returned to the circle for the final 2/3 of the seventh inning to strike out two.
Liberty improved to 14-8 overall and 8-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Valley Division as the Saints moved to 13-9 overall and 9-4 in the MVC’s Mississippi Division.
The Bolts will face Cedar Rapids Prairie in a Class 5A Region 7 semifinal on Saturday, July 18, at 7 p.m. at home. The winner will face either Dubuque Senior, Cedar Rapids Washington or Cedar Rapids Kennedy for the regional championship, and a trip to the state tournament, on Tuesday, July 21, at the highest-ranked team’s site at 7 p.m.
