Bolts split with Golden Eagles in delayed doubleheader

Liberty softball gets 5-2 win over Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, then falls 6-0

CEDAR RAPIDS– Liberty High’s varsity softball team split with Dubuque Wahlert Catholic in a doubleheader, which took four days to complete due to weather issues.
The squads met on Mount Mercy University’s (MMU) diamond in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, July 2, where the Lightning picked up a 5-2 win before real lightning and rain postponed the nightcap until Saturday, July 6 (also at MMU). The Bolts fell 6-0 in the second game.
The Golden Eagles’ two runs of game one both came in the top of the second inning in game one. Liberty scored one run in the bottom of the second, two in the fourth, and one each in the fifth and sixth for the 5-2 win. Brylee Klosterman led Liberty at the dish with two hits, including a double, while Kinsley Robertson earned the win after six innings in the circle. She gave up six hits and two unearned runs, walked one and struck out four.
Wahlert plated one run in the top of the first, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh in the shut-out.
The postseason, and a shot at the 2019 Class 4A state championships in Fort Dodge, begins on Thursday, July 11, as the Lightning travel to Washington (Iowa) to face the Washington Demons in a 4A Region 5 quarterfinal round match up at 7 p.m. The winner will take on Cedar Rapids Xavier, at Xavier, on Saturday, July 13, at 7 p.m. The regional final is set for Tuesday, July 16, at the highest-remaining ranked team’s location.
