Bolts lick the Lions

Liberty High boys defeat Linn-Mar, 51-46

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity boys improved to 6-3 on the season with a 51-46 win over the Linn-Mar Lions Tuesday, Jan. 21, at home.
Ben Houselog, a senior, put up Liberty’s first two points: a pair of free throws, which tied the game at 2-2. Ethan O’Donnell drained a three-point bucket, and followed up with a two-point basket ahead of an Ira Hazeltine three-bomb. However, the Bolts trailed 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Houselog opened up the scoring again in the second period as Liberty trailed 14-10, making it 14-12. The Lions kept their lead despite a three-pointer from Cody Shroeder, and a rebound and basket from Basil Aldoss. The Bolts trailed 20-18 at halftime.
Liberty rallied in the third quarter, taking a 21-20 lead off an O’Donnell three-pointer. The Lightning never trailed from that point on. Aldoss sank a trio of three-pointers in the period for a 32-29 advantage going into the fourth quarter. Aldoss sank his fourth three-bomb of the night in the fourth for a 42-34 lead while a pair of free throws from Brandon in the final seconds, closed out the game for Liberty.
Aldoss led Liberty with 16 points while O’Donnell and Houselog put up nine each.
Waterloo East visits Liberty on Friday, Jan. 31, with a 6 p.m. sophomore game and 7:30 p.m. varsity tip-off. The Bolts will play Carlisle at Coe College in Cedar Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 1, in a non-conference Rivalry Saturday game at 12:30 p.m., and will host Cedar Rapids Kennedy on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
