Bolts and Pirates split in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty Lightning snapped the Alburnett Pirates’ nine-game winning streak on Wednesday, June 27, at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.
The Pirates took game one of the varsity doubleheader 4-2, but the Bolts regrouped and won the nightcap, 2-1.
The Pirates struck first at the top of the second inning of game one with one run scored. Tyler Dahm nailed an RBI single in the bottom of the inning scoring Alec Boldt to tie. Alburnett plated one runner in the top of the fourth and two in the fifth, while Keian Secrist smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth driving Dahm home. Secrist was charged with the loss after five innings on the mound where he gave up 11 hits and four runs (three earned), while walking one and striking out four. Isaac Bender and Sam Funke pitched one inning apiece with one strike out each.
Secrist and Boldt knocked two hits with one hit each for Dahm, Nolan Frey, Funke and Tyler White.
The Pirates out hit the Bolts 7-4 in the nightcap, but Liberty defense held Alburnett to one run while those four hits produced two runs for the win.
Alburnett took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but Dahm stole home in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. TJ Kimm knocked an RBI single in the sixth to drive Secrist home for the 2-1 lead, and ultimately the win.
Funke earned the win with one inning on the mound and one strikeout. Ethan O’Donnell put in five innings giving up seven hits and one earned run. He walked two and struck out one while Dahm pitched one inning with one strikeout. Funke, Dahm, Kimm and Cayden Duhaime had one hit apiece.
The Bolts face the Marion Indians in a JV/Varsity duet on Thursday, July 5, at Penn Meadows Park, in North Liberty, starting at 5 p.m. and travel to Bettendorf on Friday, July 6, for a varsity doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. The Bolts face former classmates at Iowa City West High Monday, July 9, at 7 p.m. and take on City High, at Mercer Park, Wednesday, July 11, at 7 p.m.
