Bolts and Clippers run in City High’s Bud Williams Invitational

Schillinger leads Liberty boys to victory,

IOWA CITY– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Liberty High cross country teams competed in Iowa City High’s Bud Williams Invitational Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Kickers Soccer Park in Iowa City.
Liberty’s varsity boys took the team title with 39 points, topping City High (51) and CCA (95). Liberty’s Caleb Schillinger led the Lightning with his third-place finish in 16:56.40. Teammates Jack Kinzer, Christian Montover and Gavin Keeney were seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively. Brandon Barker led the Clippers with a fifth-place showing in 17:07.20 with fellow Creek Boy Gavin Zillyette ninth.
CCA’s varsity girls were fifth in team points with 131 behind champion Dubuque Senior (27), Pleasant Valley (65), City High (71) and Pekin (110), and were led by Haidyn Barker’s fourth-place finish in 20:10.32.
Liberty’s junior varsity (JV) boys were third with 45 points behind winner Pleasant Valley (36) and runner-up City High (39). Ethan Keeney was fourth in 18:24.35, with Luke Thompson eighth and Ethan Bartachek 10th. The Lightning also took the boys freshman/sophomore race with 25 points topping Pleasant Valley (44) and City High (51), with Boden Bisgard winning in 18:12.81 and Nathan Kinzer right behind for second place. Liberty’s Graham Thompson was third, while Andrew Kaczka was ninth.
Liberty’s JV girls were runner-up to Dubuque Senior (22-55) with Hannah Ramsey finishing fifth in 22:51.73. Fellow Bolt Carly Sulwer was ninth.
Liberty boys head coach Josh Hildebrand said, “What another great day of racing in some Bolt weather. It is great knowing that even when some of our guys have an off race that their teammates step up and we can still have dominant team races. Our varsity and fresh/soph won the team titles and JV faced some teams that have 60-80 boys on their team with quite the depth and still almost pulled out a victory, finishing just nine points out of first.”
The Liberty boys are scheduled to return to Kickers on Thursday, Oct. 8, for Iowa City West High’s meet, while the boys and girls compete on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Mississippi Valley Conference’s Mississippi Division Meet in Cedar Falls.
Clear Creek Amana is scheduled to run in Central DeWitt’s Invitational on Thursday, Oct. 8, with the WaMaC Conference Meet scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, in Williamsburg.
