Baseball Bolts beat the Boats

Liberty High tops CCA 6-2 in Fight With Flash Crosstown Classic

IOWA CITY– Six varsity baseball teams met Saturday, June 8, for the fifth annual Fight With Flash Crosstown Classic. The tournament, in honor of the late Austin “Flash” Schroeder, pairs up local teams in a fundraiser for the Fight With Flash Foundation, with the proceeds going to the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
One pairing pitted the Liberty High Lightning (AKA the Bolts) against the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers, in a non-conference contest with the Bolts beating the Boats, 6-2.
The Lightning struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, which was equalized by the Creek Boys in the top of the second. The 1-1 stalemate persisted until the Bolts plated two in the bottom of the fourth, and three in the fifth. CCA scored its second and final run in the top of the sixth.
Nolan Frey led Liberty’s offense with two hits, including one double, while T.J. Kimm (a triple), Cayden Duhaime, Keian Secrist, Alec Boldt and Sam Funke smacked one hit apiece. Secrist took the win after five innings on the mound where he gave up three hits and one earned run. Secrist walked three and struck out six. Cody Schroeder pitched two innings, giving up one hit and one earned run. Schroeder walked two and struck out one.
Sam Young, Cam Smyka, Tyler Schrepfer and Casey Ogden knocked one hit apiece for the Clippers. Brock Reade (who took the ceremonial first pitch from cousin Grayson Schminke) was charged with the loss. Reade pitched four innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs. He walked two and struck out six. Ben Swails pitched one inning, giving up three hits and three runs (one earned). Young pitched one inning of no-hit ball with one strikeout.
