A+ Accounting and Tax
Tax season is upon us once again, and A+ Accounting is ready to assist you with your tax preparation needs.
A+ Accounting has been in business since 2000 and is located in North Liberty.
A+ specializes in preparing personal, sole proprietorship, partnership and corporate tax returns, and the company’s fees are generally lower than what the franchise tax chains charge.
Kevin Schmidt is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) with 22 years of tax preparation experience and is the owner of A+ Accounting and Tax.
Kevin and his wife, Julie, have been North Liberty residents for 17 years. They have two children, Dylan, 15, and Alaina, 12. Kevin grew up in Cedar Rapids, attended Washington High School and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in accounting.
Jeanine Hutchins works at the front desk, greeting clients as they arrive, and helps manage the operations of the office.
LeeAnne Mast and Rachel Fehr are the accountants on staff who handle businesses’ payroll and accounting needs. The goal is to allow a business owner to focus fully on operations and what they do best, while providing the owner meaningful financial statements so they can ensure their business is heading in the right direction.
Kevin cautioned this could be a challenging year for taxpayers. The Affordable Care Act is still in place and taxpayers could get hit with higher penalties if they did not have adequate health coverage for every member in their household in 2016.
The tax filing season opens Jan. 23. However, if you are claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), the IRS will not issue refunds on these tax returns before Feb. 15. The delay is to allow the IRS time to confirm W-2 income and other information to verify eligibility for these credits. Taxpayers who are not claiming these credits may still see delays due to additional checks put in place to prevent fraud and identity theft.
There will also be more scrutiny by the IRS to ensure the proper parent is claiming a child and the correct amount of tuition is being claimed for college students.
The change in presidential administration and the uncertainty that brings makes tax planning more challenging, as well.
A+ Accounting is committed to keeping up on the ever-changing tax laws to ensure clients get all the tax benefits they are entitled to. As a CPA, Kevin is required to have at least 40 hours of continuing education each year.
A+ Accounting will be open late and on weekends during tax season to accommodate clients’ schedules. Both federal and state returns can be filed electronically at no additional cost.
The doors don’t close at the end of the tax season, and they remain available to assist their clients all year long.
