3 All-WaMaC Lady Spartans

Brianna Smith, Gabby Marty and Abby Smith named

SOLON– The Solon Lady Spartans were well represented when the 2017-18 area girls’ conference basketball honor teams were announced. During a season where the Lady Spartans regular season record was 6-15 and they suffered a first round postseason loss to the Monticello Panthers, three Lady Spartans were recognized for their performance on the hardwood.
The First Team WaMaC East Division All-Conference honor team included unanimously nominated seniors Sydney Volkenant and Sophie Wilt, from Anamosa; sophomore Lindsey Eimers, from Western Dubuque; and senior Kristen Elliott, from Mount Vernon. Rounding out the rest of the first team were senior McKenzie Maahs, from Western Dubuque; junior Sammy Moss, from Mount Vernon; junior Tara Hansen, from Dyersville Beckman; and senior Maggie Murphy, from Dewitt Central.
WaMaC Conference East Division Coach of the Year was awarded to Anamosa’s Jack Leighty and staff.
Solon senior Brianna Smith was among the players named to the WaMaC Conference East Division Second Team. Smith played in 21 games, scoring 204 points during the Spartans’ season, sinking 37.6 percent of her field goals, 29.7 percent from beyond the arc, and making 47.6 percent from the charity stripe, averaging 9.7 points per game. She pulled down 34 offensive rebounds, 54 defensive rebounds and averaged 4.2 per game. She recorded 51 assists and 31 steals.
Making up the rest of the second team honorees were Maquoketa senior Hannah Ambrosy, Anamosa juniors Taylor Hinz and Taylor Zumbach, Western Dubuque junior Karlie Fagan, West Delaware senior Lauren Collier, and Dyersville Beckman juniors Sydney Steffen and Sydney Arens.
WaMaC Conference East Division Honorable Mentions included Anamosa’s Taylor Zaruba and Maggie McQuillen, Beckman’s Brooke Lucas and McKenzie Arens, Maquoketa’s Nell Sybesma and Brie Bennis, DeWitt Central’s Sydney Small and Alex Mohr, Mount Vernon’s McKenzie Haryl and Noelle Ossenkop, West Delaware’s Brooke O’Connell and Kendra Offerman, Western Dubuque’s Emma Baumhover and Chloe Baumgartner, and Lady Spartan juniors Gabby Marty and Abby Smith.
Marty played in 21 games for Solon and scored 141 points during the Spartans’ season, scoring 36.2 percent of her field goals and 50.8 percent of her free throws, averaging 6.7 points per game. She pulled down 159 total rebounds, leading the conference during the regular season, 51 offensive rebounds and 108 defensive rebounds, averaging 7.6 per game. Marty finished the season with 23 assists, 24 steals and 12 blocks.
Abby Smith played in 21 games for the Lady Spartans, scoring 54 points while sinking 32.8 percent of her field goals and 57.1 percent from the free throw line, averaging 2.6 points per game. Smith pulled down 103 rebounds, 45 offensive and 58 defensive, averaging 4.7 per game. She accumulated 12 assists and 24 steals during the season.
Coach Lisa Bishop resigned at the end of her third season, amassing a record of 28-40 in three years at the helm of the Lady Spartans. The search for a successor is underway.
