1-point thriller to start the season

SOLON– Solon’s varsity wrestlers took a one-point thriller against Williamsburg to open the season.
And then took a drubbing from powerhouse Lisbon.
“We knew coming in this would be a young team, a lot of new faces,” explained head co-coach T.J. Bevans. “We lost 500 varsity wins last year in three guys. That’s a lot.”
2020’s 2A state champion Jax Flynn (170 pounds), as well as Zeb Gnida (152) and Seamus Poynton (182) graduated after helping the Spartans to a fourth-place finish in Des Moines.
But Solon has its returning two-time state champion, Hayden Taylor, as well as previous state individual qualifiers Caleb Ebert and Gage Marty. Marty placed seventh at state last season at 195 pounds.
Taylor started the new season off for the Spartans against the Raiders Dec. 3 at Williamsburg.
Wrestling at 160 pounds, Taylor pinned Williamsburg’s Riley Holt in 5:41 to give Solon a 6-0 lead.
Lucas Kampman (170) added three points with a 3-2 decision, and Lucas TePoel (182) provided a 12-0 major decision. The Spartans were out of the gates with a 13-0 lead.
After giving up a pin at 195, Erich Karsten (220) won by fall over Cale Fenton in 3:24, and Marty (285) delivered an 11-4 decision for a 22-6 margin.
The Raiders came rumbling back with three pins and a forfeit to take a 30-22 lead in the lower weights, but decisions by Milo Ashbacker (132) and Kaden Lamm (138) pulled Solon back to within two, and Ebert’s pin of Ayden Stratton in 18 seconds pushed the Spartans ahead, 34-30, with a single match remaining.
Jakobe Lahr (152) gave up three points with a 9-2 loss, but no more, and the Spartans held on for the 34-33 win.
Lamm, Lahr, Karsten and TePoel all gained varsity experience last season and contributed to an exciting win, Bevans and co-coach Aaron Hadenfeldt noted.
“Yes, we are young. We’ve got some freshmen who are doing all the right things right now and they’re going to take their lumps,” Hadenfeldt said. “But in a couple of years they’re going to be the guys putting the others through their losses.”
Some of those lumps came in the dual against Lisbon, which handed Solon a lopsided 68-10 loss.
The two coaches agreed it was good for the younger wrestlers to experience the team nature of a varsity dual.
Taylor was the only Spartan to earn points against the Lions, a 14-1 major decision over Braden Gladwin. The six other points came from a forfeit to Tyson Wheeler at 113. Lisbon racked up eight falls and two major decisions.
Solon rebounded with a second-place showing at the Jeremy Fulk Classic in New London Dec. 5.
Lisbon was a distant first with 249.5 points, but the Spartans fended off Fort Madison (142) and host New London (125.5) for runner-up honors with 155.5 points.
Taylor was Solon’s lone champion, but Lamm, TePoel and Marty all placed second, Ashbacker was third and a host of other Spartans earned points up and down the lineup.

It’s a good year to co-coach for Bevans and Hadenfeldt.
For Bevans, it’s his third stint leading the program and his 15th overall.
Hadenfeldt, a seventh grade language arts teacher at Solon Middle School, is in his eighth year with the Spartans, his first as head coach.
Knowing it would be difficult to replace former head coach Blake Williams during the pandemic, Bevans said, the two agreed to share the responsibilities.
“It’s easier on both of us,” he explained.
“T.J. and I complement each other pretty well,” Hadenfeldt added. With so much experience together over the years dating back to youth wrestling tournaments, he said, “Essentially, we kind of read each other’s minds.”
The two have been working since summer to keep the wrestlers on the mats.
When in-person school was suspended in March, the coaches were hopeful COVID would be under control well before their season hit high gear.
“Then we get to the summer, and it kind of sets in that we’re not going to be fine,” Hadenfeldt said.
“We thought we were going to be shut down for sure,” Bevans added.
But once high school sports were back in action with football, Bevans said, they became more hopeful of an opportunity at a season.
From youth and middle school squads to the high school team, wrestling is one program for Solon, so the new head coaches held weekly meetings and constantly communicated up and down the ladder.
They’re still taking it day by day.
“We were talking earlier about where we’re going to wrestle next week,” Hadenfeldt said. “And it’s like, well, let’s get through tomorrow first.”
Co-coaching is better this year than any other, Bevans observed, because he can handle all the logistical requirements for COVID protocols while Hadenfeldt is running a practice.
Wrestling has always been a sport where coaches have to be able to trust their assistants, he said.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way, to be honest with you,” he added of the shared title.
The two are expecting the team to take ownership of leadership and responsibility.
“We’re not going to tell you you need to get in better shape,” Bevans said. “You’ll know that when you wrestle.”
Taylor and the seniors have stepped up, he said.
Hadenfeldt agreed. The team members know what the mitigation strategies are for being in school, and the wrestling mat has almost become an escape, he said.
“We’re wrestling. We’re one of the schools lucky enough to wrestle,” he said. “We wrestled our first duals last night and there’s not a whole lot of teams across the state of Iowa right now that are able to say that.”
