Final Four

By Don Lund
Sports Writer
By the time you read this, Iowa will have played Maryland in the NIT semifinals in New York.
Wasn’t it great to see how good Iowa can be when they shoot like they did against a very good Virginia team that they beat 75-64 last week at Virginia?
Virginia had a 19-game winning streak at home and beat Duke, North Carolina and Maryland during that time.
The Hawks hit 52 percent of their shots in the second half and 49 percent for the game against the Cavaliers .

CCA boys’ track upward bound

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) boys’ track and field team finished the 2012 season in 11th place in the WaMaC out of 15 teams. But, having six state meet qualifiers on the 2013 roster, and the conference indoor champion in the long jump gives the Clipper crew hope for a better showing.

CCA boys’ golf team ready to work in 2013

TIFFIN– Jason Goslin has a young team with plenty of returning players willing to work to improve. Goslin moved from coaching the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls golf team to the boys squad this season and inherits five upperclassmen and eight underclassmen.
Seniors A.J. Liddell and Lee Herr are back as returning starters along with solitary junior Jacob Klingeman. Sophomore Zak Caldwell rounds out the experienced starters. Sophomores Killian Walters and Dylan Wolfe are returning letter winners while sophomore Ben Gingerich and freshman Nolan Navara are promising newcomers.

Hawkeye men win two more

This is a busy time of year for Hawkeye fans as there was men’s and women’s basketball at Carver-Hawkeye Arena last weekend and the NCAA wrestling championship in Des Moines.
The Hawkeye men got to host two games last week at Carver for the opening round of the NIT and they won them both.
Last Wednesday they knocked off Indiana State, 68-52, and on Friday, Iowa beat Stony Brook, 75-63.

Solon Lady Spartans tackle indoor meets

A cold, snowy March has made indoor track meets a popular venue. Though events and entries are limited with shorter tracks and limited space, they provide a good look for coaches and athletes ahead of the end-of-March through May outdoor season.
Through three indoor meets, Solon’s girls are providing some of the answers. Still, with spring break taking away a large share of the team… and this week’s first outdoor meet cancelled, there are plenty of questions.

No team points were kept for the meet.
Weather permitting, the Clippers will return to Mount Vernon on Saturday, March 30, for the Mustangs’ Coed Invitational.

Spartans knock out Hawkeyes, 59-56

Michigan State put together a second-half rally, knocking Iowa out of the Big Ten Tournament and into the NIT.
One of the problems I have about the NCAA tournament is when you have a team with a losing record in the field.
That means a team, like the Liberty Flames (15-20), who won their conference tournament, knocked out a team like Iowa (21-12), who finished sixth in the toughest conference in America.
I don’t see why the committee can’t say you at least have to have a winning record like the NIT does.

‘Coaches for Kids’ honors Kevin Miller

IOWA CITY– The 7th annual Coaches for Kids benefit for Children of Promise, Youth Mentoring Programs will spotlight three area high school coaches who go above-and-beyond to act as mentors for their youth. Basketball coach, Robert Fontana of Kennedy High School; golf coach, Mark Wilden of Kennedy High School; and football coach, Kevin Miller of Solon High School will each be recognized by University of Iowa head football coach, Kirk Ferentz, during the Coaches for Kids benefit at the Sheraton in downtown Iowa City on April 2.

Hawkeye men and women have 20 wins

The Hawkeye men needed to win their last two home games and maybe two games in the Big Ten Tournament to have a shot at the NCAA tournament.
The got one in a good win over Illinois, 63-55, last week at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
It was another one of those grind-it-out games, but Devyn Marble and Iowa’s bench were too tough for the Fighting Illini.
Devyn was 10-10 from the free throw line, scoring 21 points with six rebounds and four assists.
Devyn has really stepped up his game since Mike Gesell went down with a foot injury, and has carried the team to a 2-1 record without Mike.

Hawk men split

The Hawkeye men took on both Indiana teams last week, hosting Purdue last Wednesday and traveling to Indiana on Saturday.
The Boilermaker game at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, which Iowa won 58-48, was one of those grind-it-out games that wasn’t a lot of fun to watch… unless you were an Iowa fan.
It didn’t help that Mike Gesell was out with a stress fracture. He has averaged the most minutes since the Big Ten season started and might be back for the Big Ten Tournament.
Devyn Marble looked good taking over the point. He had 18 points, four assists and only three turnovers in 29 minutes.
