Defense needs to get better

This week, I’ll look at the defense.

Clipper boys take second on Solon’s track

SOLON– Tony Brack’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers finished second to the Solon Spartans Tuesday, April 16, at Solon’s Denny Gruber Track Meet. The Clippers tied with Dyersville Beckman with 102 team points to the Spartans’ 170.
The CCA 4x200-Meter Relay crew of Josh Martinac, Tanner Bandy, Kam Kahler and Jared Ganschow took the gold and in the process set a new school record. The squad also is now the tops in Class 3A and seventh across all classes. Ganschow also won in the 800-Meter Run and Jack Murray led the field in the 1,600-Meter Run.

Clipper ladies 4th at Washington Invitational

WASHINGTON– Jane Astor’s Clipper girls track and field team headed south Thursday, April 18, for the Washington Girls Invitational and finished the night fourth in team points. Megan Hall won the 100-meter dash and Mia Smith won in the 100-meter hurdles while a combination of Smith, Celine Fender, Ashley Prusha, Natalie Brimeyer and Megan Lukas took second in the 4x100-meter relay.
Results as provided by Washington High School:
Discus throw: 3, Morgan Cox, 101-00. 6, Molly Villhauer, 85-00.
Long jump: 5, Corrine Schwarting, 14-04.50. 6, Tyhesia Simpson, 14-03.00.

West boys, girls dominate at City’s Forwald/Coleman Relays

IOWA CITY– The West High track and field teams traveled across town to City High Thursday, April 18, for the Little Hawks’ Forwald/Coleman Relays and performed in dominating fashion. The Women of Troy won their meet with 132 team points, knocking the host Hawks to second with 120. The Trojans won the men’s meet with 168 points, also putting their hosts in the second-place slot with 141 for City.

Drake detour includes nine Solon entries

As if three meets in a week wasn’t enough, Solon’s girls have qualified for nine events at this weekend’s nationally renowned Drake Relays. Though rare in most big name track meets, high school competition is a staple at Drake, with 16 events helping pack the stadium. Drake has sold out its Saturday sessions for over 30 years.
At the line for Solon this weekend will be its 4x100, 4x200, and 4x800 relays, as well as Lauren Benzing in the 1,500 and 3,000 meter races, Rylee Smith in the 100-meter hurdles, Jordan Smith in the long jump and Kara Misel in the shot put and discus.

Hawkeye spring football

PART TWO

This is the second part of a look at Hawkeye football and spring practice.
Last week I talked about the depth and experience of the offensive line.
This week I’ll look at the tight ends, wide receivers and a new position called Y-back.
The Y-back will be a combination of tight end and blocking fullback.
The tight end position should be as good and deep as the offensive line.
Zach Derby is the only graduate, but when you talk about senior C.J. Fiedorowicz (6-7, 265) as your starting tight end, you are in pretty good shape.

Scoreless week for Spartans

SOLON– The weather has been cold and wet, and the sun didn’t shine on the Spartans as they hosted the No. 1 team in Class 1A last week.
Solon’s boys’ soccer team fell to Dyersville Beckman, 1-0, Friday in Solon, the first loss of the season. The Spartans are 3-1-1.
“We obviously picked a bad opponent to turn in our worst performance of the year,” reported head coach Jeremy McMurrin. “It would have been very ugly if it wasn’t for Joe Weeks in goal, who made 16 saves out of 17 chances.”

Lady Spartans fall to Waterloo Columbus

WATERLOO– Solon’s Lady Spartans fell to sixth-ranked Waterloo Columbus, 2-1, last Tuesday in Waterloo.
Alison McKinnie gave Solon an early lead with a goal on an assist from Abby Haas, but Columbus scored twice before the half and the second half went scoreless.
“Despite the abysmal conditions, we felt really good about our play,” said head coach John Tucker. “We controlled the ball very well and our defense did an amazing job holding their offense to just a few shots.”
Katie Silberstein was credited with five saves, and came out to smother plays before shots could be taken, Tucker said.

MARENGO– The Solon boy’s track team turned in an impressive performance in winning the Ruth Ahrens Invitational track meet, held this past week at Marengo. The team showed tremendous balance, scoring points in every event except one.
Team scores were as follows:
Solon 140
CCA 125
Vinton-Shellsburg 85
Williamsburg 68
Regina 63
Benton 54
Alburnett 18
Meskwaki 2
First place winners included:
• 4x800-meter relay: Paul Pisarik, Tyler Appleget, Zach Kienholz, Trevor Yahr, 8:49;
• Shot put: Dalton Ferguson, 49’5.25;

Three meets, three wins for Lady Spartans

Girls win at Tipton, Marengo and West Branch track meets

By Joe Wilkinson

TIPTON– At some point during the tumult to stay warm, girls in foul weather football gear were simply spinning until they fell; then trying to get up without using their hands.
With temperatures in the upper 30s, and wind pushing the ‘feels like’ factor into the 20s, athletes and fans at the Tigerette Relays girls track meet in Tipton Friday were doing just about anything to keep warm and cheer on their teammates.

No NIT champ

Iowa basketball season came to an end last week at Madison Square Garden with a 74-54 loss to the Baylor Bears.
The Hawks picked a bad time to go cold in their shooting as they hit only 26 percent for the game and missed at least 12 point-blank baskets.
That’s their lowest shooting percentage this season.
I’ve been doing an informal pool asking my friends if they would rather have Iowa make a deep run in the NIT or lose in the first or second round of the NCAA tournament.
Most of them agree with me that it’s fun to see the Hawks win and keep playing, like they did in New York.

Lakeview PTO’s second annual Spartan Dash fundraiser set for Saturday, April 27

SOLON– The Lakeview PTO will be hosting its second annual Spartan Dash on Saturday, April 27, rain or shine. The Spartan Dash is a fun and crazy fitness event that will serve as Lakeview PTO’s largest fundraiser of the year. Interested individuals should sign up to participate in the event with a family team. Family teams will walk, skip, or run through obstacles set up along the one-mile trail in the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Obstacles will be suitable for both children and adults and are guaranteed to have you laughing.
