West stays perfect on the road; Trojans’ pounding offense saves the night

DUBUQUE– The Rams of Dubuque Senior High School put up quite a fight Friday, Sept. 27, as they hosted the Trojans of Iowa City West on Dalzell Field in an MVC-Mississippi Division contest. West was defending its 4-0 record, while the Rams entered the fray with a 1-3 showing, after having knocked-off Linn-Mar 28-13 in week two action.
The Trojans kept their perfect record, holding-off the Rams and ram-rodding a ground attack for a 32-20 win.

CCA picks up homecoming win over Fort Madison

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader

TIFFIN– The Fort Madison Bloodhounds sniffed around for a victory and a chance to spoil homecoming for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Friday, Sept. 27. Instead, they were sent to the pound as the Clippers played dogcatcher with a 28-8 victory. The win improved the Clippers to 2-3 overall (0-2 in Class 3A District 6) with the regular season half-over.

CCA volleyball beats Williamsburg 3-1

WILLIAMSBURG– It took four sets to settle the matter, but in the end the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity volleyball team reigned over the Williamsburg Raiders on the road Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Clippers took the 3-1 win improving their record to 7-4-0. CCA took the first set 25-17, dropped the second set 25-17 and prevailed in the next two games 25-23 and 25-16.

Clipper cross-country in action at Solon

SOLON– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross-country teams traveled to Solon Monday, Sept. 23, for the Solon invitational. Iowa City High’s Little Hawks reigned in both the girls’ 4K and boys’ 5K events. The host Spartans were third (girls) and fifth (boys) while the Clippers finished eighth in team points in girls’ competition and ninth in the boys’.
Chloe Keith led the Clipper girls with a 40th-place finish in 18:16. City High’s Ellen Carman won in 15:48. Eric Douglass was the leader for the boys in blue with a 12th-place finish in 17:44. Tipton’s Eric Lenz won in 16:29.

Payback

Can you believe that Iowa has played the Western Michigan Broncos three times and last Saturday’s 59-3 blowout was their first win?
I was at the first one in 2000 as a fan. That was Kirk Ferentz’s second year and the Hawkeyes lost, 27-21.
The second loss came in 2007 as Iowa went into the game with a 6-5 record and the 28-19 loss to the Broncos kept Iowa out of a bowl game.
That was depressing and I remember the Bronco players doing a lot of trash talking during the game as I was on the sidelines taking pictures for the Leader.
They are not talking much now.

Girls take third at Solon Invitational; boys fifth

SOLON– Alex Smith has been running distance races since junior high. Now, though, as a junior on Solon’s girls cross country team, she is learning to run again.
In the last two years, she could keep her eyes, and pace, on now-graduated Lauren Benzing. Benzing did not lose a regular season or district meet through three years. Smith could settle into the pace and do well. She finished in the top five, 10 or 15 at most meets, settling in as Solon’s second, third or fourth runner.

Big plays in big win for Spartans

Solon clobbers CCA 42-7 for Homecoming victory

SOLON– It was a good start.
Brandon Kramer took the handoff and ran 76 yards on Solon’s second play of the game against Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Friday night.
Just like that, it was 7-0 Spartans and the tone was set for the rest of the game.
Solon added a sprinkling of breakout plays to solid performances by the offense and defense, a recipe for a 42-7 Homecoming victory over the Clippers.
“Our plan was to simply improve in every phase of the game,” said head coach Kevin Miller. “We did a much better job of executing on offense and defensively we were very sound.”

Smith brings the hammer against Beckman

SOLON– Jordan Smith obliged the Solon student section by bringing the hammer down against Dyersville Beckman last week.
The Lady Spartan varsity volleyball squad defeated Beckman 3-0 Tuesday night (Sept. 17), moving to 13-1 on the season and dropping to No. 2 in the Class 4A rankings released by the Iowa Girls High Athletic Union.
After a bit of a slow start, the Lady Spartans dominated Beckman in the second game and cruised to another sweep, their 12th of the year, 25-18, 25-13, 25-18.
But it was the standout play of junior Jordan Smith that really made the game memorable.

West escapes CR Prairie undefeated

CEDAR RAPIDS– The West High Trojans survived their greatest threat so far this season, escaping from Cedar Rapids Prairie with a 21-14 win and keeping their record perfect at 4-0.
“Prairie plays us tougher than anybody,” coach Brian Sauser said after the win on a bizarre night. “It’s fun when we get out there and score 50, 60 points. But to gut-out a win in a tough place to play is huge.”

West Cross-Country in action in Ames

Girls third, Boys 17th on tough course

AMES– Both boys and girls cross country squads were in action for Iowa City West High Saturday, Sept. 21, at the 7th Roosevelt-Heartland Classic on the Iowa State University’s cross country course.
“It was a tough meet today,” boys coach Brian Martz said, “both the competition and the course.” The boys finished 17th as a team in a field of 35. Edina, Minn., won the boys’ 5K run with 134 points, the Trojans were 17th with 449.
Daniel Gardarsson continued to lead the way for West, putting in a fourth-place finish in 15:59.0.

Women of Troy sweep Rams

DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy improved their record to 11-5-0 with a 3-0 sweep of the Dubuque Senior Rams Tuesday, Sept. 17, on the road. West dominated the match 25-8, 25-10 and 25-12.
Ali Tauchen, a freshman, led the offense with nine kills while junior Laynie Whitehead had eight. Emily Halverson, a freshman, and senior Toni Martins had five kills each, senior Mollie Mason made four and Lizzy Klemme (senior) and Mikaela Morgan put up three kills apiece.

CCA can’t stop Spartans’ drive

By Doug Lindner

SOLON– If you looked at the offensive stats, this game didn’t look bad for Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers.
But if you looked at the score, it was another story.
The Clippers traveled to Solon Friday evening and ended up as fodder for the Spartans’ Homecoming celebration in a 42-7 loss, moving the Clippers to a 1-3 record and a third consecutive loss.
The Clippers racked up over 300 yards of offense, but penalties and miscues plagued CCA.
