Clippers pick up win with 3-0 sweep of Iowa City Regina

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team may be young, without any seniors, but they can still put up a fight and rule the night. Such was the case Monday, Sept. 30, when Iowa City Regina visited for a non-conference match. The Clippers took care of business in three-straight, winning 25-13, 25-20 and 25-14.

Dubuque Hempstead beats West volleyball 3-1

IOWA CITY– The fourth-ranked in Class 5A Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs took a win away from the Iowa City West High Women of Troy Tuesday, Oct. 1, on the volleyball court. The Mustangs won 3-1 in varsity volleyball action.
West came up short 25-23 in the opening set, rallied to a 25-21 win in set two, and fell 25-21 and 25-15 to close-out the match.

hawk talk

Talk about deja-vü all over again.
Last year, Minnesota was 4-0 when it came to Iowa City.
The Gophers were a good running team and were playing good defense last season.
This year, Minnesota was 4-0 coming into to the Iowa game.
The Gophers’ running game is one of the best in the Big Ten and their defense was bigger and stronger.
Last year, Iowa won 31-13 and Mark Weisman rushed for 177 yards (8.4 per carry). Iowa led 24-0 at half.
This year Iowa won 23-7 and Mark ran for 145 yards (6.1 per carry). Iowa led 17-0 at the half.
Can you say domination?

307 yards

Solon quarterback Jacob Black rushes for near-record yardage in 35-14 win over Sabers

DeWITT– The Central DeWitt Sabers just could not figure out Solon quarterback Jacob Black.
Black was 0-4 from the pocket and finished with a quarterback rating of 0.0, but he did something no other Solon quarterback has done, and that’s rush for 300 yards.
Black compiled 307 yards rushing on 26 carries Friday night, just shy of the school individual record of 329 yards set by Randy Beranek in 1978, to lead the Spartans to a 35-14 win of the Sabers of Central Clinton at DeWitt.
“I don’t think we have had a 300-yard rusher for over 20 years at Solon,” remarked head coach Kevin Miller.

Big road games coming next week

Top conference rivals Mt. Vernon and West Delaware on tap

SOLON– Solon head coach Peter Gustin knows better than to look ahead on the schedule.
“When teams look ahead, they falter,” Gustin said. “The little things and discipline start to go out the window and there isn’t a team that can just flip a switch and play its “A” game. We focus on certain areas of improvement in every match, regardless of our opponent.”
But Gustin admitted with looming conference showdowns on the road at Mount Vernon and West Delaware, he may be looking at a little more film than usual, and the regular goofiness at practice will be tapered off.

Tie goes to the (No. 6) runner

Solon boys and girls third at Anamosa

By Joe Wilkinson

ANAMOSA– In high school cross country scoring, only a team’s first five runners figure into the scoring. But Solon’s David Coberly learned that finishing sixth can be vital.
Led by Patrick McGill and Ty Appleget at the Sept. 28 Anamosa Invitational, Solon was tied with Fort Madison as each team’s top five crossed the finish line. McGill (12th) and Appleget (14th) each medaled for the Spartans; followed by teammates Taylor Walkner (21st), Simon Düster (25th) and Nik Rehnke (28th).

Ill-fated victory?

West powers through despite health woes

By Chris Umscheid

IOWA CITY– Even if they’re not hitting on all cylinders, the West High Women of Troy can still knock out tough teams and rack up victories. Such was the case Tuesday, Sept. 24, as the Linn-Mar Lions visited Trojan Nation.
“Everybody’s sick and I thought we looked like we didn’t have any energy,” said coach Kathy Bresnahan, battling her own voice-depleting virus. Despite the various illnesses, and Hannah Fairfield sidelined by injury, the Women of Troy tamed the Lions, 3-0.

West stays perfect on the road; Trojans’ pounding offense saves the night

DUBUQUE– The Rams of Dubuque Senior High School put up quite a fight Friday, Sept. 27, as they hosted the Trojans of Iowa City West on Dalzell Field in an MVC-Mississippi Division contest. West was defending its 4-0 record, while the Rams entered the fray with a 1-3 showing, after having knocked-off Linn-Mar 28-13 in week two action.
The Trojans kept their perfect record, holding-off the Rams and ram-rodding a ground attack for a 32-20 win.

CCA picks up homecoming win over Fort Madison

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader

TIFFIN– The Fort Madison Bloodhounds sniffed around for a victory and a chance to spoil homecoming for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers Friday, Sept. 27. Instead, they were sent to the pound as the Clippers played dogcatcher with a 28-8 victory. The win improved the Clippers to 2-3 overall (0-2 in Class 3A District 6) with the regular season half-over.

CCA volleyball beats Williamsburg 3-1

WILLIAMSBURG– It took four sets to settle the matter, but in the end the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity volleyball team reigned over the Williamsburg Raiders on the road Tuesday, Sept. 24. The Clippers took the 3-1 win improving their record to 7-4-0. CCA took the first set 25-17, dropped the second set 25-17 and prevailed in the next two games 25-23 and 25-16.

Clipper cross-country in action at Solon

SOLON– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) cross-country teams traveled to Solon Monday, Sept. 23, for the Solon invitational. Iowa City High’s Little Hawks reigned in both the girls’ 4K and boys’ 5K events. The host Spartans were third (girls) and fifth (boys) while the Clippers finished eighth in team points in girls’ competition and ninth in the boys’.
Chloe Keith led the Clipper girls with a 40th-place finish in 18:16. City High’s Ellen Carman won in 15:48. Eric Douglass was the leader for the boys in blue with a 12th-place finish in 17:44. Tipton’s Eric Lenz won in 16:29.

Payback

Can you believe that Iowa has played the Western Michigan Broncos three times and last Saturday’s 59-3 blowout was their first win?
I was at the first one in 2000 as a fan. That was Kirk Ferentz’s second year and the Hawkeyes lost, 27-21.
The second loss came in 2007 as Iowa went into the game with a 6-5 record and the 28-19 loss to the Broncos kept Iowa out of a bowl game.
That was depressing and I remember the Bronco players doing a lot of trash talking during the game as I was on the sidelines taking pictures for the Leader.
They are not talking much now.
