Obituaries

Betty Coglan

Betty Jean Coglan, 86, formerly of North Liberty, died Sunday, July 13, 2014, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City.
A celebration of Betty’s life took place on July 18 at Divots at the Brown Deer Golf Club. Family committal services were held at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty.

Kenneth West

Kenneth West, 72, of Middleburg, Florida, formerly of North Liberty, died at his home April 7, 2014, after a short illness. Kenneth chose to donate his body to science and the remains were cremated. The ashes will be laid to rest at Oakland Cemetery, Solon, with private graveside services, Saturday, July 26, at 1:30 p.m. A celebration of his life will be a time of food and fellowship for family and friends at the public meeting room of the Solon Public Library after 2 p.m.

Carolyn Beard

Carolyn K. (Fencl) Beard, 49, of Gays Mills, Wisconsin, formerly of Solon, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Memorial Services were held Friday, July 11, at First Presbyterian Church, near Ely.
Carolyn was born Oct. 22, 1964, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Joseph A. and Bonnie (Harris) Fencl. She graduated from Solon High School in 1983, and later attended Upper Iowa, studying art. Carolyn married Tedd Beard on April 12, 1985. Carolyn enjoyed sewing, gardening, drawing and spending time with her children and family.

Mary Jo Fitzpatrick

Mary Jo Fitzpatrick, 66, North Liberty, crossed over peacefully at her home, Monday, July 7, 2014, after spending the day with her loving family. Before she passed, she commented that the cancer was gone and her dad was with her. Her passing came seven years to the day following his.
A Parish Vigil Service was held July 10 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Memorial contributions in her honor can be made to Miracles in Motion of Swisher, or Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Johnson County and may be sent to PO Box 167, Iowa City, IA 52244.

Brett Jacobs

Brett Jacobs, 33, Monticello, died Monday, July 7, 2014, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held on July 11 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Monticello with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Reed Stockman officiated. Thoughts, memories and condolences may be left atwww.goettschonline.com. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Dorothy Meyer

Dorothy A. Meyer, 79, of New Vienna died Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 12. The Rev. Dennis Quint officiated.
Dorothy was born Nov. 29, 1934, in Dyersville, the daughter of Charles and Regina (Wilhelm) Wolf. She married Alvin Meyer on May 29, 1954, in Dyersville, where they resided until 1966, when they moved to New Vienna.
