A ton of fish, a ton of fun

Legion Friday night fish fries return Feb. 28 Raffle proceeds to help bring traveling Vietnam memorial

SOLON– This year, there will be plenty of fish.
In 2019, the Solon American Legion attracted the biggest crowds ever for its traditional Friday night fish fries.
Typically, over the course of seven Fridays heading into Easter, the Legion would draw an average of 230 people each evening.
“And last year we averaged over 350 per night,” explained Legion member Denny Hansen.
Last year, organizers decided to offer shrimp each week and moved the serving line out of the kitchen, he noted, and it made a big difference.
But they encountered an immediate problem– they hadn’t ordered enough food.

Stronger Together

Booster Club and school board to get control of fundraisers

SOLON– There are too many fundraisers.
So, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education has endorsed a proposal from the Solon Booster Club to bring all athletic fundraisers under one roof.
At a board meeting Feb. 20, Booster Club Treasurer Adam Stahle unveiled “Stronger Together,” a project aimed to strengthen the club’s sagging membership and address the district’s concern over the number of groups seeking funds on behalf of school programs.

7th Annual Brett Smith Memorial 5K Run/ walk, April 18

Proceeds to benefit Solon Firehouse project

“My community is why I will always be a Spartan. Since I was little I always knew there was something special about it, and always knew that’s where I would want to grow up and live out my life. I’m blessed to have the support I do and I love you all for it. Words can’t describe how grateful I am to live in Solon and wouldn’t change it for the world.”– Brett Smith (Facebook entry: Dec. 23, 2011)

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Firehouse fundraiser keeps chugging along $4,000-8,000 coming in weekly

SOLON– Over 550 people donated to the Solon Firehouse campaign, representing 28 states, 29 counties in Iowa and five countries.
Between cash and commitments, the Solon Firefighter Association raised about $670,000, according to Solon firefighter Greg Morris.
Morris has been working to raise funds for a year and a half, and the donations continue to come in at a rate of between $4,000-8,000 a week.
“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” he noted.
On a single recent day, Morris received contributions from people in Nebraska and Ohio.
“Which makes what we’re doing fun,” he said.

Record calls for 2019

Solon firefighters log busiest year ever

SOLON– “We set a record again this year,” Chief Bob Siddell reported. “Four-hundred-fifty-eight calls. The most we’ve ever done as a fire department.”
Siddell presented the fire department’s 2019 annual report at a joint meeting of the Solon Tri-Township Emergency Response Agency and Solon City Council Jan. 22 in City Hall.
“And you can see the trend from 2014 (346 calls) until now is not going down,” he said. “With Solon growing, with the area outside of the community growing, those numbers I think are going to continue to increase.”

Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale scientist Kristine Lang join PFI’s board of directors

Three others re-elected to fill farmer slots

Ames - Solon farmer Carmen Black and Rodale Institute scientist Kristine Lang, of Brandon, are the newest additions to Practical Farmers of Iowa’s board of directors. They were among five individuals elected in January by Practical Farmers members to join or renew their tenure on the 12-person board of directors.
The other three elected are farmers representing different regions of Iowa, including Ann Franzenburg of Van Horne; Wendy Johnson of Charles City; and Gayle Olson of Winfield. The board elections took place during PFI’s 2020 annual conference in Ames.

On the climb

Registrations increase for 3rd annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic Feb. 15

SOLON– The Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic was not designed to be like other bicycle races.
Winding in and around Lake Macbride State Park, the course has climbed 2,300 feet of elevation over 20 miles, something designer Nate Kullbom said is “nearly impossible to do in Iowa.”
Kullbom, store manager for Sugar Bottom Bikes in North Liberty, said some riders felt the route was too difficult.
The third annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic on Saturday, Feb. 15, will feature only 1,700 feet of climbing in the 25-mile race, he said.
“That’s still a lot.”

New finance officer settles in

One job leads to another for Roman Meyers

SOLON– There was a silver lining when Roman Meyers missed out on the Solon Parks and Recreation Director job.
Meyers, 27, and his wife Megan had moved to Solon after she accepted a fourth-grade teaching position at Solon Intermediate School, and he was at Solon City Hall to vote in a school board election when he noticed a job posting for the city’s recreation director.
With a degree in kinesiology and a lifelong love of sports, Meyers decided to apply and went through the interview process.

Time to read

SMS 40-book challenge a real page-turner

SOLON– Middle school students are reading more and more.
And it’s making a difference in reaching benchmarks set by the district.
At the heart of it all is Solon Middle School’s 40-Book Challenge, an optional but highly encouraged competition over the course of the school year.
Every student is asked to read 40 novels from a wide variety of genres, and are given dedicated school time to accomplish the task.
“There’s something quite amazing going here,” said Julie Smith, middle school instructional coach.

DNR closes roads at Hawkeye Wildlife Area

OXFORD– Roads on the south side of the Hawkeye Wildlife Area have been closed to vehicle traffic for the remainder of this winter and into early spring to minimize rutting and other damage caused when thawing and melting occurs.
“Road repairs are very expensive and eliminating driving during these periods helps reduce time and material to reestablish good driving conditions,” said Steve Woodruff, wildlife biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. “Roadways will be reopened when roads are in favorable conditions.”
