Should Coralville funnel funds to private business?

Since the mid-2000s, the City of Coralville has been engaged in significant economic development projects that have been both hailed as visionary and necessary for the community’s growth, and criticized as unfair and irresponsible to taxpayers. In more recent years, the city has fallen under greater scrutiny for its TIF practices and continued participation in providing financial incentives to private enterprise. This is the third in a three-part series examining the city’s current fiscal status, its economic decision making and the concerns of area citizens who question both.

Solon youth football camp Aug. 5 through 8

SOLON– The 2013 Spartan Youth Football Camp for students entering second through eighth grade will be held Aug. 5 through 8 at Spartan Stadium.
Second through fifth graders will attend from 9 until 10:30 a.m., and sixth through eighth graders will attend from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The fee is $50, with checks payable to Solon Football.
This camp will allow each camper to learn and apply the various skills and techniques applicable to football.

Solon Retirement Village 40th anniversary carnival set for Saturday, July 27

SOLON– The Solon Retirement Village (SRV), home to a full continuum of care for seniors in Solon, plans to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year with a free community carnival on Saturday, July 27.

City of Solon to mark Main Street project with free ice cream

SOLON– To dedicate the completion of its Main Street improvement project, the City of Solon will be handing out free ice cream before the Wednesday, July 31, Music on Main Solon Idol performance.

North Liberty puts out call for bids on $400K water tower paint job

NORTH LIBERTY– Some North Liberty residents may soon notice a tangible shroud of mystery hanging over one northeast part of the city.
Literally.
The city’s water tower on 240th Street is scheduled to be repainted this year, and the process requires a large curtain to be draped over the entire structure in order to contain any debris it might create.

Highway 965 in NL to be reduced to a single lane on Friday for road work

NORTH LIBERTY– Workers are expected to pour road shoulders at the intersection of Pheasant Lane and Highway 965 on Friday, July 26. Highway 965 will be open to north and south bound traffic, but the highway will be down to a single lane with flaggers around the intersection. Residents should allow for extra travel time.

43rd annual Beef Days celebration

SOLON– This year On Friday and Saturday, July 19 and 20, Solon Beef Days will hold its 43rd celebration. This two-day event, traditionally starting the third Friday in July, has collected and donated over $385,000 back into the community and surrounding area since its inception in 1971.

St. Mary selling raffle tickets during Beef Days

SOLON– St. Mary Catholic Church of Solon will be selling raffle tickets during this year’s Beef Days on July 19 and 20. First prize is a Kinnick Stadium suite for the Iowa-Northwestern football game on Oct. 26. The package includes 18 tickets, three parking passes, food and drink. Second prize will be $500 cash and third prize will be $250 cash. Drawing for the prizes will be held during St. Mary annual Harvest Festival on Sept. 22. Tickets will be sold for $5 per ticket or five for $20. Winners do not need to be present to win and all proceeds will go to the St. Mary’s building fund.

Fackler’s Grove Cemetery meeting July 23 in Ely

ELY– On Tuesday, July 23, at 7 p.m., the Ely Community History Society (ECHS) will hold an informational meeting about its Fackler’s Grove Cemetery restoration project. The ECHS will give a presentation on the history of the cemetery and families buried there, progress on the restoration effort, and future plans. All who are interested are invited to attend. It will be held in the lower level of the Ely Community Center, 1570 Rowley St. in Ely.
