May Day breakfast Saturday, May 4

SOLON– GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club will sponsor a May Day Breakfast on Saturday, May 4, from 7 until 11 a.m. at the Solon United Methodist Church serving egg and meat casseroles, homemade kolaches and rolls, fruit, orange juice, coffee and milk. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 to 12 at the door. Children under 5 eat free. Proceeds benefit the Solon Public Library and the Solon Community School District libraries.

Solon Spotlight Schwann’s fundraiser through May 10

SOLON– Do you love ice cream? Or any of Schwann’s other great products? Solon Spotlight is sponsoring a Schwann’s fundraiser to help raise dollars to support the performing arts in Solon. Solon middle and high school music students will be around asking for your help. To help, just order some of Schwann’s delicious and convenient items from any student, and then pick up your order at the high school on May 15. Spotlight will receive a percentage of every Schwann’s order placed for this fundraiser. You can also place an order online at www.schwanns.com.

PTO to discuss standards based grading May 7

SOLON– The Solon Middle School PTO will meet Tuesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in the middle school media center. Director of instructional support Matt Townsley will be the featured guest and will speak about standards based grading at the start of the meeting. There will be time for questions. This is an opportunity to learn about the grading system that is now active in all classes in the Solon Community School District.

Old Gold Dining to move May 6 through May 10

SOLON– Old Gold Senior Dining will be served at the Family Life Center, Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 10 while the floor in the fellowship hall is being replaced. Swisher Legion Junior Auxiliary garage sale to be May 4

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion Junior Auxiliary is hosting a garage sale at the upper level of the Swisher American Legion Saturday, May 4. The proceeds from this sale will go to support the English River Outfitters. A non-profit organization that supports veterans in the town of Washington. NL library to close one week for move

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Library will be closed from Monday, May 6, through Sunday, May 12, so library staff and volunteers can move into the new addition. This will allow renovation of the existing space to begin. The library will operate with a limited collection until the entire project is complete.
The expansion and renovation project is expected to be completed by late summer or early fall. Then, the library will close for another week before a grand re-opening. The curbside drop box will also open at the main Library entrance in mid-May.

NLFD hosting blood drive to support long-time firefighter

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) is hosting a blood drive on Monday, May 6, at the fire station from 3:30 until 5 p.m. It’s a way for the volunteers to give something back, and at the same time, pay it forward while showing support for one of their own.

City offers curbside collection of flood-damaged property

NORTH LIBERTY– Following last week’s torrential rains, the City of North Liberty will collect flood-damaged property curbside for its residents all week April 22 through 26. Residents need only place flood-damaged items at their curb.
Other items will not be collected at the curb, but can be brought to the public works facility on South Front Street from 7 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 27. Items that can be discarded at the facility are furniture and other bulky items, appliances, tires and auto batteries, metal and car parts, and electronics.

NLPD, DEA to help dispose of unwanted prescription drugs at local pharmacies April 27

NORTH LIBERTY– On April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its sixth opportunity in three years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring medications for disposal to either Liberty Pharmacy at 555 W. Cherry St. or Pharmacy Matters at 1765 Lininger Ln. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
