Solon boys, girls sweep Anamosa XC meet… ALL four races

ANAMOSA– Get out the broom. It was a clean sweep. Solon’s seventh-ranked Class 3A girls ran away with the title across Anamosa’s cross country course Saturday, Sept. 26. The fourth-ranked boys followed suit with a solid victory, too. And just to drive home the meaning of “team depth,” the junior varsity (JV) boys and girls did likewise! This was Solon’s second tour of the hilly Anamosa course. In their season opener, Aug. 29, each varsity team was third.

Solon downs #11 Clinton

Spartans 2-2 at Liberty tournament

NORTH LIBERTY– Solon’s varsity volleyball team has faced its fair share of ranked opponents.
And while the Spartans have kept it competitive, it’s been tough to steal away a game, much less a match.
Notch one in the win column.
Solon took a 2-0 win over the No. 11 (4A) Clinton River Queens, 21-13, 21-15, at Liberty High School’s Volleyball Invitational Sept. 26.
The Spartans went 2-2 at the tournament, falling to the host Lightning (No. 7, 5A) and Center Point-Urbana (CPU) while picking up wins against Fairfield and Clinton.

Changes due to COVID-19 fears splits qualifying and state meets

DES MOINES– The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) announced changes to the 2020 boys and girls cross country season on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The schedule was altered due to ongoing fears related to the COVID-19 epidemic and a need to employ mitigation means for competitors and crowds.
The state qualifying meets and the state meet will be separated by classification and scheduled to take place over two days. The state meet remains in Fort Dodge at the Lakeside Golf Course, home to the state meet since 1993.

Spartans deliver Stanton’s first home win at homecoming

Solon downs Vinton-Shellsburg, 28-6

SOLON– Homecoming benefited both the Spartan faithful and Head Coach Lucas Stanton on Friday, Sept. 25, as the Solon varsity football team handed the coach his first home win, 28-6, over the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings.
“It was definitely nice to get a win at home in front of our fans,” Coach Stanton professed. “I know our kids really wanted to make sure we got back to protecting our home field. We felt we were in control even when we were down 3-0, we didn't panic. Homecoming is always a week of distractions even in the COVID-19 world we are living in right now.

Iowa 1 south of Iowa City to reopen Sept. 25

IOWA CITY– Replacement of two bridges and construction of two new box culverts on Iowa 1, just south of Johnson County Road F-52, south of Iowa City, was expected to be completed and the roadway reopened to traffic Friday, Sept. 25, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Fairfield construction office.
There may be intermittent lane and shoulder closures over the next few weeks where flaggers assist traffic through the work area to allow the contractor to finish the detail work for this project.

Council leaves fireworks law as is Split members vote down ban

No support for limiting to July 4

SOLON– Solon residents can continue to shoot private fireworks July 1-4.
City council members took no action to ban the displays during a Sept. 16 meeting.
A motion to prohibit fireworks failed on a 2-3 vote, and a second motion to restrict usage to July 4 died for a lack of a second.
Council members Lynn Morris and Lauren Whitehead voted in support of a ban. Council members Steve Duncan, John Farlinger and Dan O’Neil dissented.

Homecoming festivities: No parade, no dance

SOLON– Homecoming will look quite a bit different in 2020.
The traditional Wednesday parade is anticipated to be replaced with a pep rally at Spartan Stadium, capping off with the crowning of the Homecoming King; and the Saturday dance will be converted to an outdoor event at the stadium, according to Solon High School Instructional Coach Amanda Stahle.
The Homecoming Queen will be announced and crowned at halftime of the Friday Sept. 25, varsity football game against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings.

Some SCSD families flee virtual learning after rocky start District preventing spread onsite

SOLON– It’s been a bumpy ride for kindergarten-through-fifth grade families opting for the Solon Community School District’s (SCSD) virtual learning option.
But SCSD Director of Teaching and Learning Josh Lyons reported things improved after lengthy and serious conversations with the third-party provider Edmentum, Inc.
Lyons and Superintendent Davis Eidahl updated Solon school board members on the district’s Return to Learn plan during a Sept. 17 meeting.
Eidahl opened the meeting by noting the district’s success with onsite learning.

Boys tie for title, tiebreaker forces second

Girls win division at Ballard invite

BALLARD– The anticipated cross country showdown, between Class 3A’s No. 1 Ballard Bombers girls and No. 7 Solon’s Lady Spartans was not to be. The Sept. 14 near upset, though, came from Solon’s No. 5 3A boys, who went down to the wire with back-to-back state 1A champions Madrid.

First and second at Spartan Cross Country Invitational

SOLON– Approaching midseason, Solon’s cross country teams are leaning heavily on their depth to finish at– or near– the top of the standings.
That was driven home at Solon’s Sept. 21 home meet, at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area. Varsity boys shook off a one-point bump to second from their last meet to a close first place this week. With three top-10 runners, the Spartans pushed past Bettendorf, and a 52-59 win. In the junior varsity (JV) meet, they were second, 30-39 to Mount Vernon-Lisbon.

42 Stanton and Spartans’ lucky number

Spartans blast Trojans, 42-7

TAMA– The Solon varsity football team moved to 2-2 on the season, 2-0 in Class 2A, District 6 play, following another 42-point evening.
The Spartans blasted the South Tama Trojans, 42-7, on the road on Friday, Sept. 18.
It was the second straight week of 42-point productivity, following the week three rout of Union, 42-0.
Forty-two may just be the Spartans’ and Head Coach Lucas Stanton’s new favorite number.
Stanton, when asked if Friday night’s Homcoming game might be another 42-point affair, refused to forecast.
“Ha, ha! No predictions, but we do like that number!” he responded.
