North Liberty schedules listening posts on racial equity

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty city leaders will engage the community to discuss social justice and racial equity through a series of listening posts.
The listening post sessions will be held online and in person, at a variety of times, between July 29 through Aug. 9. Each listening post will be a public-comment format, with commenters able to attend the session as they are available. Face masks or face shields are required at in-person outdoor sessions. Register for online sessions through the city’s website, northlibertyiowa.org. Attendees will be asked for their name and city of residence.

Six Clippers earn WaMaC West baseball honors

Reade, Smith and Bollers named First Team

OXFORD– Six Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School varsity baseball players capped off their short 2020 season by picking up WaMaC West All-Conference Baseball honors.
Junior Brock Reade was a unanimous First Team pick at pitcher, Sophomore Parker Smith was a unanimous pick for the infield, and junior TJ Bollers earned a spot at utility.
Senior Casey Ogden was a Second Team selection as pitcher with senior Tyler Schrepfer and sophomore Ben Swails earning WaMaC Recognition.

Norris and Frey named to Valley Division First Team

NORTH LIBERTY– Seven Liberty High varsity baseball players garnered Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Baseball All-Division honors.
Seniors Jacob Norris and Nolan Frey earned Valley Division First Team spots with Norris a unanimous selection. Seniors Sam Funke and Tyler Dahm and junior Ethan O’Donnell were Second Team picks. Seniors Alec Boldt and Isaac Bender earned Valley Division Honorable Mention.

Henze, Schrock and Bedford named to First Team

OXFORD– Six Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School varsity softball players capped their short 2020 season by picking up WaMaC West All-Conference Softball honors.
Seniors Raina Henze and Ainsley Schrock and junior Gabrielle Bedford were First Team selections at pitcher, catcher and utility player, respectively.
Sophomore Bailey Olerich was a Second Team pick for the outfield with senior Cheyaenne Bunch and junior Grace Bedford picking up WaMaC Recognition.

Kara Maiers named Valley Division Athlete of the Year

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High junior Kara Maiers was named the 2020 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division for the conference’s All-Division Softball Selections.
Maiers was also a unanimous First Team pick and joined five other Liberty players on the roster. Senior Brylee Klosterman was also a First Team selection.
Junior Miranda Jones and eighth-grader Mischa Reiners were selected for Second Team honors. Sophomore Kinsley Robertson and junior Tiffany Jones earned Valley Division Honorable Mention.

Clear Creek Amana baseball knocks out No. 1 Assumption, 12-3, for first-ever state tourney appearance

DAVENPORT– Once again, the Creek Boys of Clear Creek Amana High School made history. Last spring, the Clippers made their first state basketball tournament appearance since 1993. On Wednesday, July 22, the Clippers clinched their first state baseball tournament appearance in school history, upsetting the No. 1 (Class 3A) Davenport Assumption Knights, 12-3, in a substate final game at Modern Woodman Park in Davenport.

Reynolds’ proclamation calls for schools to reopen next month

VAN METER– Governor Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation directing the state’s school districts to facilitate on-site, in-person learning when the 2020-21 school year begins next month. Reynolds signed the proclamation on Friday, July 17, and held a press conference in Van Meter.

Special election set for Sept. 1 in Tiffin

Winner will fill city council vacancy

TIFFIN– A special election will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Tiffin to fill a vacant seat on the city council.
Council member Rodney Walls resigned on May 28 with the council accepting his resignation on June 9. Six residents submitted applications for possible appointment to the council, which took up discussion of appointment or election during a work session and regular meeting on Tuesday, July 14.
Councilman Eric Schnedler moved and Councilman Al Havens seconded a motion to fill the appointment by special election which was approved unanimously.

Creek Boys tame Tigers, CCA tops Grinnell, 6-5

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity baseball club improved to 13-4 overall with a 6-5 non-conference win over Grinnell, a member of the Little Hawkeye Conference, on Monday, July 13, in Tiffin.
The Tigers scored one run in the top of the first inning and attempted a late rally with four runs in the top of the seventh. The Clippers plated one run in the bottom of the second and the third, followed with three runs in the fourth and the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Liberty advances to regional final with 12-0 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity softball team came one game closer to a potential first-ever state tournament appearance Saturday, July 18, in an inter-Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) duel as the Valley Division Lightning faced the Mississippi Division Prairie Hawks of Cedar Rapids Prairie.
The Bolts scorched the birds 12-0 in the Class 5A regional semifinal game, at home, and advanced to a regional final against Valley Division foe Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Johnson County Supervisors discuss the origins of Johnson County

IOWA CITY– In his play “Romeo and Juliet,” William Shakespeare wrote, “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.”
In Johnson County, Iowa, however, some are hoping the county will still smell as sweet under a new namesake.
Recent social unrest fueled by protests against racism has led to statues and monuments, mostly related to the Civil War, being damaged, destroyed or taken down. Several national food products are seeing changes to their branding, eliminating trademark personas such as Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima due to connections with slavery.

New rec. director lays out plans for the city’s first ever recreational programming

TIFFIN– He had high hopes.
When Frank Haege packed up his family in Minnesota and moved to Solon (where his wife is from and has extended family), it was with the intention of starting a first-ever recreation department for the City of Tiffin. Haege’s first day on the job was Monday, April 13, and shortly after arriving in Tiffin, he said “I am really looking forward to working with all of the existing recreational groups in the area.”
And, he had a simple goal for the residents of Tiffin, “Get people moving.”
