What to do with tree limbs and bulky debris

NORTH LIBERTY– Monday’s storm created a tremendous amount of debris and cleanup will be a lengthy process. City crews will begin picking up tree limbs from curbs Aug. 11, and a debris site has been established for residents who are able to haul their own limbs down.
Tree limbs can be piled between the street and sidewalk. Please place them parallel to the curb in sections of 10 feet or less and take care not to push trees and limbs into the street. City crews will start picking up as early as possible.

CCA board approves full return for PK-8, and 50/50 for high school

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board of Education approved a Return to Learn (RTL) plan in a special meeting Wednesday, July 29, at the high school in Tiffin.
The plan, “Plan 2” of four options considered, calls for a full return of pre-kindergarten (PK) through eighth-grade students, and a 50/50 return for the high school with students broken into morning and afternoon sessions.

North Liberty adopts face covering initiative to combat COVID-19

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s city council has unanimously adopted a public health initiative advising those in North Liberty to keep social distance, to wear face shields or cloth masks in public settings and businesses to adopt must-wear policies.
“Reducing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, is critical to our schools’ re-openings, our businesses’ recoveries and our community’s health,” noted a city press release. “Face coverings keep transmission low, prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed and protect our community members who are vulnerable.”

Oxford firefighters and first responders call for vote of no confidence against mayor

OXFORD– Penny Jenn, the mayor of Oxford, still has her job following a split no confidence vote by city council members during a regular meeting Tuesday, July 14, in the Oxford fire station. Two council members (David Cook and Bryan Cooling) voted against the Mayor while Vicki Kasper, Pat Lewis and Marti XXXXXX voted in support of Jenn. Jenn ran unopposed on the ballot last November in a reelection bid garnering 106 votes. There were 60 write-in votes.

Solar Power World magazine’s annual list includes North Liberty-based solar installer for a third straight year

NORTH LIBERTY– Although the COVID-19 pandemic is the immediate crisis unfolding at the moment, mitigating climate change is also an urgent issue. Solar PV installation is one way to help reduce greenhouse gases from fossil fuels. Solar Power World has recognized the efforts of solar contractors across the United States in its 2020 Top Solar Contractors list, where local solar installer MOXIE achieved a rank of 121 out of 407 companies. The list also shows that MOXIE is now the 31st largest residential solar contractor in the nation.

Track, weight, cardio and lap swimming appointments available at NL Community Center

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Center opened track use to track members by appointment Monday, Aug. 3. Members can continue to make appointments for lap swimming and weight and cardio equipment. Masks and health screenings are required.
While gyms remain closed to host summer camp, these other facilities are available weekdays from 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m.

After 14 years as hygienist, Schminke comes back as dentist

NORTH LIBERTY– “I feel like I’m home,” Dr. Trish Schminke said.
Schminke, 43, obtained her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Iowa (UI) earlier this year and returned in July as a dentist with Design Dental in North Liberty, where she started as a hygienist in 2002.
“It feels even better than I thought it would,” she noted happily.
But it took the 1995 Linn-Mar graduate some time to find her calling.
A native of Marion, she initially attended the UI on a pre-med track.

DES MOINES– A few too many errors, and too few runs combined to end Clear Creek Amana’s first Class 3A State Baseball Tournament appearance.
The Clippers fell 4-3 in the quarterfinal round to the Norwalk Warriors on Tuesday, July 28, at Principal Park stadium in Des Moines.

IHSAA announces football changes, CCA and Liberty release schedules

BOONE– Barring the reimplementation of COVID-19 related restrictions, there will be high school football in Iowa this fall. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) released a revised schedule for the 2020 season on Friday, July 24, which calls for a first practice date of no earlier than Monday, Aug. 10, and a first competition date of Thursday, Aug. 27. State semifinals are set for Nov. 13-15 with the finals on Nov. 20-21.

Fareway declines to redeem cans and bottles

BOONE– Effective with the expiration of the Iowa Governor’s Emergency Declaration on July 25, Fareway grocery stores will not be accepting containers for redemption in its Iowa stores, according to a press release by the company.
The company cited health authorities “continue to advise that COVID-19 and other viruses are transmitted through respiratory droplets,” the release stated. “Accepting potentially contaminated containers inside our stores presents a great risk of harm to the health and safety of our employees and customers.”
