CR Kennedy cruises past Liberty girls, 50-35

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Liberty High varsity girls’ basketball team dropped to 2-14 on the season Tuesday, Feb. 4, on the road, as Cedar Rapids Kennedy roared past them, 50-35.
Sophomore Haley Napoli put the Bolts on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer, unfortunately for Liberty, it would be the only points of the first quarter as the Cougars pulled ahead, 12-3. Kennedy took a 31-13 halftime lead as Sam McPherson, Isabel Smith, Ava Meyer and Neshy Byrd fought to keep the Lightning in the game.

Scranton wins twice for CCA in double dual

CEDAR RAPIDS– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) wrestlers competed in their final dual meets of the regular season Thursday, Feb. 6, at Cedar Rapids Washington High School, against the host Warriors and Dubuque Senior Rams.
The Clippers fell, 51-14, to Dubuque Senior and, 57-21, to Washington.
Kael Scranton was a double winner for the Creek Boys, taking a 138-pound match against Senior’s Carter Elliot with a 12-3 major decision and winning a 132-pound match against Wash’s Joe Foreman with a pin in 1:57.

NL Council discusses capital projects and spending surplus funds

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council continued its discussion on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 budget Tuesday, Jan. 28, during a work session preceding a regular meeting. Council members looked at potential allocations using surplus general fund dollars from FY19 as well as proposed capital projects for the new fiscal year.

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter winter festival, a weeklong effort to break people out of their wintertime hibernation, wrapped up Saturday, Feb. 1, with adult kickball and the Run the I“Bitter”Rod 1k doggie fun run/walk at Penn Meadows Park, along with several other events around North Liberty, including the Snuggie Crawl and Boy Scout Troop 216’s annual Chili Supper.

NL Community Pantry welcomes Iowa State Senators Wahls and Kinney Feb. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Iowa State Senators Zach Wahls and Kevin Kinney will visit the North Liberty Community Pantry Friday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m.
The senators will tour the facility and talk with pantry staff about services, the recent increase in pantry traffic, and news surrounding area mobile home residents. Zach Wahls has been a vocal advocate for tenants’ rights, attending and speaking at rallies for Golf View Mobile Home Park last summer.

35th Annual Legislative Symposium and FFA Day at the Capitol

DES MOINES– Future Farmers of America (FFA) members from across Iowa converged on the Iowa State Capitol, in Des Moines, to build character and promote citizenship, volunteerism and patriotism. Approximately 300 high school students wearing blue corduroy from 51 schools flooded the Iowa State Capitol Building on Jan. 28. The students visited with legislators, exhibited skills learned in the agriculture classroom and learned the importance of citizenship. It was all part of the 35th Annual Iowa FFA Legislative Symposium and FFA Day at the capitol.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls’ basketball team pounded the winless South Tama Trojans for the second time this season Tuesday, Jan. 28, at home. The Clippers rolled the Trojans, 73-18, with a continuous clock for the second half thanks to a 49-10 halftime lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by junior Whitney Traetow gave the Creek Girls a 45-6 advantage ahead of the halftime break.

Bolt girls get their second win of the season against East High Trojans

McPherson and Napoli lead Liberty in 59-21 win over Waterloo East

WATERLOO– Lightning struck twice as Liberty High’s varsity girls picked up their second win of the 2019-20 season Friday, Jan. 31, on the road at Waterloo East. The Lightning scorched the Trojans 59-21 in the teams’ second meeting this season. The Bolts fried East 66-41 at home on Friday, Dec. 13.
Liberty jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first quarter and held the Trojans scoreless in the second for a 26-6 halftime score. A 20-point effort by the Lightning in the third, while only allowing five East points, made it 46-11 going into the final period.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team went full speed ahead past the visiting Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings on Friday, Jan. 31, for a 76-50 WaMaC West win. It was the second meeting this season for the ball clubs, and the Clippers’ second win against the Vikings after dropping them, 70-62, on Jan. 14 in Vinton.
The Clippers never trailed in the contest, winning the first quarter 9-5, leading 38-14 at halftime, and holding a 57-36 advantage going into the final period.

Mustangs slip past Lightning in OT

Liberty falls, 69-66, to Dubuque Hempstead

DUBUQUE– The Liberty High varsity boys’ basketball team came close, very close, to upsetting the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Hempstead. Instead, the Mustangs escaped, 69-66, in overtime to improve to 11-3 while dropping the Bolts to 6-6.

CCA’s Nick O’Connor signs with Indian Hills

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) senior Nick O’Connor signed a letter of intent to compete at Indian Hills Community College next year. O’Connor, a multi-sport athlete for the Clippers, will compete on the Warriors’ track and field team.
O’Connor qualified for the 2019 State Coed Track and Field Meet, taking sixth place in the 1,600-meter run, eighth place in the 3,200-meter run and anchored the third-place 4x800-meter relay with Tom Johnson, Kaden McAreavy and Jack Sexton.

North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter concludes this weekend

NORTH LIBERTY– Beat the Bitter, a weeklong winter festival, opened on Friday, Jan. 25, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 1. The annual event started in 2016 and has continued to expand its offerings as a way to get families out of their homes in the middle of winter for fun and community fellowship. With only a slight breeze and temperatures in the low 30s, the weather was far less “bitter” than it was during last year’s Polar Vortex.
