A bright light shines on

Liberty High mourns and remembers a young life lost

NORTH LIBERTY– A very dark year got even darker for the Liberty High School community as 17-year-old Liberty High senior Brooke Anne Langland died on Friday, Nov. 13.
She was born on Dec. 17, 2002, to John and Traci Langland. A senior, she had been accepted into the University of Iowa to pursue a career in healthcare, and was planning to try out for the Iowa Dance Team. “Since the age of three, Brooke had lived and breathed dance,” her obituary said. She was a member of Liberty High’s three-time state championship dance team.

CCA school board keeps things the same in annual organizational meeting

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District, the “Home of the Clippers,” will see no changes at the top of the school board after the board of directors’ annual organizational meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19.
Board President Jennifer Mooney retained her post following nomination and without an opposing challenge. Mooney was voted-in unanimously with board member Kathy Swenka absent. Vice-president Matt McAreavy also retained his position after nomination without a challenger, and by unanimous vote of the board.

CCA school board discusses Nov. 30 return to on-site instruction

OXFORD– If all goes well, students in the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District will return to their classrooms on Monday, Nov. 30. The district moved to virtual learning on Monday, Nov. 9, after a wave of positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines sidelined a significant number of transportation department employees. Coupled with a high COVID positivity rate in Johnson and Iowa counties, the district applied for, and received, a waiver to return to online learning until Tuesday, Nov. 24. The district is on Thanksgiving Break Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 25-27.

TIFFIN– Last season, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys basketball team made school history with its first state tournament appearance since 1993. The tournament campaign, only the third for the Clippers, culminated in a Class 3A third-place trophy.

TIFFIN– Due to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District returning to all-online learning, extracurricular activities, including athletic practices, are on hold until the students return to in-person/onsite learning on Monday, Nov. 30. However, the Clipper wrestlers aren’t just sitting around biding their time.
“The kids are running, working out and practicing individually,” said Coach Kyle Forness.

Liberty High’s Gabbie Schroeder verbally commits to Drake

NORTH LIBERTY– She plans to become a Bulldog but first she has one more season as a Bolt.
Liberty High’s Gabbie Schroeder recently verbally committed to play volleyball for Drake University, joining teammate and 2021 commit Addie Schmierer. The 5-8 junior defensive specialist had 19 assists and one kill for the Lightning with 174 digs this season. Schroeder was also second on the team in ace serves with 31.

2020 Iowa Girls Coaches Association Volleyball Teams announced

IOWA CITY– Eight local high school student athletes were named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s (IGCA) 2020 All-District, Senior All-Stars and Academic All-Stars teams.
Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Calia Clubb and Hailey Pollock were named to the Class 4A SE All-District Team. Clubb, a junior, also earned an Honorable Mention spot on the Class 4A All-State Team after leading the Clippers with 243 kills. Pollock, a senior, produced 221 kills this season.

NORTH LIBERTY– The Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) has released its winter sports guidelines for member schools, including Liberty High School in North Liberty. The policy is based on guidance from the governor’s office, the Iowa Department of Education, the Iowa Department of Public Health, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association.

Students in the Clear Creek Amana Community School District returned to all-online learning after the district shifted back to virtual education on Sunday, Nov. 8.

NORTH LIBERTY– Reconstruction of Highway 965, also known as Ranshaw Way, in North Liberty will continue next year with Phase Five of the multiyear project.
City Engineer Kevin Trom and representatives from Shive-Hattery presented an overview of the $9.3-9.4 million project to the city council on Tuesday, Oct. 27, during the council’s regular meeting (conducted virtually).

Governors proclamation requires masks in gatherings and services

NORTH LIBERTY With rapidly rising COVID-19 cases and hospitals around the state reaching capacity, Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a new proclamation adding restrictions and continuing the Public Health Disaster Emergency. The proclamation imposes a number of additional public health measures, including a mask requirement in a variety of settings, effective at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

NLPD awarded $1,000 for AEDs

Area nonprofits and communities receive over $25,000 from Alliant Energy’s Foundation

CEDAR RAPIDS– A total of 15 area organizations received community grants totaling $25,500 from Alliant Energy’s Foundation.
The grants fund projects in four key areas, which resonate with Alliant Energy’s core values: Hunger and Housing, Workforce Readiness, Environmental Stewardship, and Diversity, Safety and Well Being.
Among the 139 awarded by Alliant Energy’s Foundation for the fall grant cycle, totaling over $345,000, the City of North Liberty Police Department received $1,000 for automated external defibrillators (AED).
