CCA to host school wellness policy meeting April 17

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana Community School District invites parents to a meeting about the school wellness policy on Wednesday, April 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Clear Creek Elementary. Having healthy choices at school helps keep children healthy and ready to learn. The school wellness policy helps the school create an action plan for nutrition and physical activity at school. Parents can share their opinions and help make sure the policy is meeting the needs of their students. The current wellness policy can be found at www.ccaschools.org/domain/1039.

City holiday hours announced for Easter weekend

NORTH LIBERTY– On Friday, April 19, the city’s administrative offices, including City Hall at 3 Quail Creek Cr., will be closed for Good Friday. Other services will be closed or have adjusted hours through Sunday, April 21, as follows:

The North Liberty Community Library will be closed and regularly scheduled programs will not take place on Friday, April 19, or Sunday, April 21.
Police
Administrative offices will be closed, but patrol will operate as normal.
Fire
Administrative offices will be closed, but responses will operate as normal.

Kites for Kids seeks volunteers

NORTH LIBERTY– The 2019 Kites for Kids Festival will be held Saturday, April 13, from noon to 2 p.m. at Liberty High School. A partnership between Community Partnerships for Protecting Children, Johnson County and the City of North Liberty, the event supports Child Abuse Prevention Awareness with free kites, face painting, treats and beverages. Van Allen celebrates diversity at 2nd International Night

NORTH LIBERTY– The flags of many nations waved at James Van Allen Elementary March 28.
Twenty-two countries were represented at Van Allen’s second annual International Night, which brought between 500-800 people to the North Liberty school, according to Mandy Bezoni-Puaina, one of the founders of the event and an English Language Learner instructor.
The evening provided a showcase of national heritage, allowing the young student population to demonstrate its diversity and fellow students to familiarize themselves with cultures other than their own.

CCA’s Schrock takes second and third at discus and shot put

TIFFIN- Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School’s girls track and field team hosted its annual Creek Classic Relays Friday, April 5, and welcomed a two-class field of 15 teams. CCA’s WaMaC rival to the east, the Solon Lady Spartans, won the Class A meet with 210 team points while the Clippers’ foe to the west, Williamsburg, was the runner-up with 136. The Creek Girls were sixth in the seven-team class with 67 points. Pekin won the Class B meet with 170 points, topping runner-up North Linn (120.5 points).

TIFFIN- Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School’s track and field team hosted its annual invitational meet Thursday, April 4, with Anamosa, Benton Community, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Des Moines North, Dike-New Hartford, Iowa City West, Linn-Mar, North Linn, Vinton-Shellsburg and Williamsburg participating.
Brandon Barker was the Clippers’ sole individual winner after taking the 1,600-meter run in 4:49.90. Kaden McAreavy, Tom Johnson, Jack Sexton and Quentin Gisleson won the 4x800 relay in 8:51.23 for the Creek Boys’ only winning relay.

Liberty High’s second Dance for a Difference raises $43k for the sickest kids

NORTH LIBERTY– Nearly double last year’s total.
Liberty High’s second annual Dance for a Difference managed to accomplish it in just a few hours Sunday, March 3.
The school’s “Difference Makers,” a student-run organization, started the Liberty High tradition last year in an effort to raise money to help the sickest kids: those battling cancer or other life-threatening illnesses.

CCA’s latest enrollment projections show more students, and more buildings

OXFORD– Rob Schwarz, CEO of RSP, an educational planning firm under contract to the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District, got right to the point.
“Surprise, surprise, you’re enrollment is going to continue to increase, and it’s going to continue to increase at a rate greater than what we saw last year,” he said.

McCarty retires where he started

North Liberty postmaster calls it a career

NORTH LIBERTY– Kim McCarty made it back to North Liberty.
It was where he started with the United States Postal Service (USPS) in 1979.
“Believe it or not, one of my goals in my career was I always wanted to come back and retire from North Liberty,” McCarty said. “I was fortunate enough to be able to make the right steps to be able to do that.”
McCarty, 61, the North Liberty Postmaster since 2012, retired from the USPS at the end of the day Friday, Feb. 1.
Postal customers lucky enough to visit were treated to cookies and other treats.

Sayre resigns from NL City Council

Effective Feb. 1

NORTH LIBERTY– Effective Friday, Feb. 1, North Liberty City Council member Jim Sayre will resign his seat.

Sayre provided his official notice of resignation Friday, Dec. 28, after accepting a new job with the University of Arizona in Tucson. His term was scheduled to continue through December this year.

“North Liberty has been incredible to me and my family and we’re grateful for having had the opportunity to live, play and work in such a great place,” he wrote in his resignation letter.

Council approves NLPD facility cuts

Excessive bid leads to $700,548 in cost reduction

NORTH LIBERTY– Faced with necessary cuts, plans are moving forward on North Liberty’s police facility. During its Jan. 8 session, the North Liberty City Council unanimously accepted the project bid and authorized execution of the contract, as well as a change order, for the North Liberty Police Department’s (NLPD) future station, to be located at 340 N. Main St., north of the fire department.
