Tiffin’s Karen Ruppert looks back on a career with the postal service

TIFFIN– When Karen Ruppert closed the customer service window on Dec. 24, 2019, she also closed out a career spanning 42 years with the United States Postal Service.
Ruppert, a resident of rural Tiffin, was the postmaster of the fast-growing community from Feb. 23, 1991, until her official retirement date last month.

It’s a unique enterprise for a unique individual who has been an active duty Marine, a member of the Iowa Army National Guard and a High Risk Unit officer with the Iowa Probation and Parole Department.

SOLON– When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.
Solon High School’s Drama Department will present a musical version of “Freaky Friday” Friday, March 6, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 7, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 8, at 2 p.m.

Legion Friday night fish fries return Feb. 28 Raffle proceeds to help bring traveling Vietnam memorial

SOLON– This year, there will be plenty of fish.
In 2019, the Solon American Legion attracted the biggest crowds ever for its traditional Friday night fish fries.
Typically, over the course of seven Fridays heading into Easter, the Legion would draw an average of 230 people each evening.
“And last year we averaged over 350 per night,” explained Legion member Denny Hansen.
Last year, organizers decided to offer shrimp each week and moved the serving line out of the kitchen, he noted, and it made a big difference.
But they encountered an immediate problem– they hadn’t ordered enough food.

Booster Club and school board to get control of fundraisers

SOLON– There are too many fundraisers.
So, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education has endorsed a proposal from the Solon Booster Club to bring all athletic fundraisers under one roof.
At a board meeting Feb. 20, Booster Club Treasurer Adam Stahle unveiled “Stronger Together,” a project aimed to strengthen the club’s sagging membership and address the district’s concern over the number of groups seeking funds on behalf of school programs.

Liberty High’s show choirs put on an afternoon extravaganza

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School’s show and jazz choirs brought down the curtain on a successful 2019-2020 season with a Spring Showcase concert featuring vocal groups Spark, Amplify, Voltage, Impact and Storm Saturday, Feb. 22, at Liberty High. Interspersed among the groups were three teasers for the upcoming spring musical “Shrek” as Agustin Colon-Sanchez (Donkey), Posey Stoeffler (Fiona) and Scott Dill (Shrek) performed solos from the show. North Central Junior High’s New Connections show choir also performed a set.

Firehouse fundraiser keeps chugging along $4,000-8,000 coming in weekly

SOLON– Over 550 people donated to the Solon Firehouse campaign, representing 28 states, 29 counties in Iowa and five countries.
Between cash and commitments, the Solon Firefighter Association raised about $670,000, according to Solon firefighter Greg Morris.
Morris has been working to raise funds for a year and a half, and the donations continue to come in at a rate of between $4,000-8,000 a week.
“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” he noted.
On a single recent day, Morris received contributions from people in Nebraska and Ohio.
“Which makes what we’re doing fun,” he said.

Vintage Estates of North Liberty, a Cooperative Community, will build the 30 single-family homes, and a community center, on a parcel of land along S. Jones Blvd.

7-on-7 football gains in popularity

A new football option for 3rd grade through high school exists in Tiffin

TIFFIN– What is 7-on-7 football you ask? The answer is, the game that has grown for 20 years around the state of Iowa, but has not caught hold until now.
“There have been pockets of groups that play 7v7 or, High Schools that will get groups together to practice the passing game against each other, but that is really it. There is not a lot of competitive or youth 7v7 football being played,” said Trevor Bollers Director of Iowa 7v7 football, a non-profit organization he created along with his wife Jennifer.

Registrations increase for 3rd annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic Feb. 15

SOLON– The Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic was not designed to be like other bicycle races.
Winding in and around Lake Macbride State Park, the course has climbed 2,300 feet of elevation over 20 miles, something designer Nate Kullbom said is “nearly impossible to do in Iowa.”
Kullbom, store manager for Sugar Bottom Bikes in North Liberty, said some riders felt the route was too difficult.
The third annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic on Saturday, Feb. 15, will feature only 1,700 feet of climbing in the 25-mile race, he said.
“That’s still a lot.”

Faulty motor produces smoke scare

TIFFIN– A small electric motor led to a big disruption Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School in Tiffin.
The motor, part of the ventilation system for the building, and located above a hallway between the main gymnasium and the band room, failed and burned up a little before 2 p.m. Smoke from the motor set off the building’s fire alarms, which prompted the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center to page out the Tiffin and Oxford fire departments for the alarm activation.
