Local solar company, now in seven states, makes case to legislators

NORTH LIBERTY– The power of the sun was on display for state legislators at the North Liberty Public Works campus Aug. 14.
Members of the Iowa Future Caucus, a bipartisan coalition of millennial lawmakers, visited one of the city’s solar arrays and listened to concerns from Moxie: America’s Solar Company representatives regarding the state’s approach to renewable energies.
Moxie and the City of North Liberty partnered on a series of solar arrays to power municipal buildings in 2016.

Hoover Trail coming together

All but Ely Road underpass done this year

SOLON– It’s close.
Oh, so close.
The Hoover Trail link between Solon and Ely will be mostly filled in yet this year, with only the Ely Road underpass to construct in 2020.
A gravel, at-grade crossing is in place at the underpass site north of 140th Street providing access to the entire trail, according to Brad Friedhof, program manager for the Johnson County Conservation Board.
But there are still small stretches of concrete to pour between Polk Avenue and Ely Road along Highway 382 near Solon.

Bicycles hijack capital improvements list

Council work session focuses on connecting Main Street with trail

SOLON– Getting bicyclists safely downtown quickly jumped to the top of the list.
The Solon City Council revisited its capital improvement program (CIP) at a Sept. 4 meeting, and extending the Hoover Trail from its head at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area (SRNA) to Main Street dominated the conversation.
The CIP is a list of ranked projects, with estimated costs and projected scheduling used to help plan for short- and long-term municipal upgrades.

Solon lights up West Liberty 48-7 on Armed Forces Appreciation Night

SOLON– The Solon Spartans moved to 2-0 on the 2019 varsity football season with a 48-7 non-district win over the West Liberty Comets at home on Friday, Sept. 6, for Armed Forces Appreciation Night.
The Comets took the Spartans to overtime in 2018, but this time Solon took control early.

Re-enactor tells Iowa’s role in the War Between the States

NORTH LIBERTY– The Civil War, also known as, “The War Between the States,” and still to some as “The War of Northern Aggression” or “The War of the Rebellion” was waged between 1861 and 1865 with 750,000 dead. According to www.americancivilwar101.com, Iowa, a Union state, sent 76,242 men, which totaled nearly 3 percent of the Union Army, and made up just over 11 percent of the state’s population. Iowa sent four artillery batteries, 10 cavalry regiments, and 48 infantry regiments along with five Sailors/Marines. Over 13,000 Iowans died during the war.

“East of Middle West” cameras and crew invade grocery store

SOLON– It was a little bit of movie magic.
Customers at Sam’s Main Street Market shared the aisles with movie cameras, sound equipment, actors and technicians from the production crew of “East of Middle West,” on the afternoon of Aug. 28.
For about seven hours, scenes were filmed throughout the grocery store, including at the front register as rush hour was starting for owner Sam Lensing and his staff.
“I was kind of worried it might hinder the flow,” Lensing said. “It went pretty smooth.”
Lensing said the film’s director wanted a lot of bodies moving around in the background.

Forever Green raises money for the community with eighth annual Fun Fair

CORALVILLE– For the eighth year, the staff at Forever Green Landscape and Garden Center held their annual Fun Fair, a free day of games and activities.
The Saturday, Aug. 24, event raised money for three organizations: the North Liberty Back 2 School Bash, The Dream Center (afterschool programs/parenting groups in the Iowa City schools) and local junior high and high school student Family Resource Centers.

TIFFIN– Solon has Beef Days. Swisher has Fun Days. North Liberty has Blues & BBQ. Jason Wilkerson is hoping his Conquer the Creek family obstacle course joins these other events on the map of summertime fun.
“Everybody’s got these certain events that towns are known for,” he said. “That’s what we’re trying to do for Tiffin. It’s something totally different, a youth obstacle course, just to get kids out of the house,”

SOLON– Spartan Stadium filled with fall sports athletes and Spartan faithful, like a cornucopia of athletic promise, prior to the Spartans’ preseason scrimmage with Union on Friday, Aug. 23.
The matchup, previously scheduled to be played at Union was relocated to Solon when conditions of Union’s field forced the change of venue. Subsequently the Falls Sports Kick Off was also rescheduled from Thursday, Aug. 22, to coincide with the Union scrimmage at Spartan Stadium.

NL volunteers help area youth during Back 2 School Bash

NORTH LIBERTY– Back to school time can be a tremendous burden to families with lists of necessary school supplies and the challenges of ever-growing children in need of new shoes and clothing.
The North Liberty community banded together on Friday, Aug.16, to ease that burden with the second annual “Back 2 School Bash” held at Penn Meadows Park.
Five-hundred fifty-seven North Liberty area kids received backpacks, shoes, toiletries, socks and underwear, a bag of groceries, school supplies, and even a haircut; and all at no charge.
