Young farmers argue for changing Ag Exemption

IOWA CITY– Young farmers in Johnson County raised their voices loud and clear to the board of supervisors: change or scrap the county’s agricultural exemption policy.
The young guns blazed away during a Thursday, May 10, public hearing on the proposed county comprehensive plan, citing the immense difficulties many budding farmers encounter in trying to purchase 40 acres (the minimum amount of land required to be considered a “farm” in Johnson County).

Growing a love of learning

Enrichment Therapy & Learning Center offers kids an alternative

NORTH LIBERTY– On the morning of Wednesday, April 25, five students huddled around a table, immersed in a science experiment. In the theme of invention, learning specialist Elizabeth Drewelow led the group as they pierced lemons with pennies and nails in attempt to conduct electricity. But this was not your everyday science class.
Located on Jordon Street in North Liberty, Enrichment Therapy & Learning Center, P.C. offers an alternative path to learning for students struggling with academic and communication skill development.

Girls take WaMaC East track title

State track qualifier at home Thursday, May 11

SOLON– The midfield celebration was loud… but short… as Solon’s girls raised their WaMaC Conference East Division trophy May 7. They walked away with a 37-point win on their home track. But they also realize the hard work continues. Their Thursday task– the Class 3A state qualifying meet, also at Solon– is to advance as many events as possible to the 2018 state track meet, May 17-19 in Des Moines.

CRANDIC on the run

Inaugural marathon supports Corridor school districts

NORTH LIBERTY– In the calm morning hours of Sunday, April 29, a sea of over 1,200 people gathered on Landon Road in North Liberty, tightening their shoelaces and warming up in preparation for the journey ahead. The city served as host not only to residents of the Corridor area but also to people from across the U.S. as the RUN CRANDIC half marathon began.

Brewing with Dunn Brothers

Cafe opens south of Forevergreen Road

CORALVILLE– Between the morning rush to get out the door and the push to get through traffic, there are few greater needs than to be fully caffeinated. With a new coffee shop in town, those needs are being fully taken care of. Alexandra and DeAngelo Seay moved to the Corridor to pursue their goal of creating a place to bring family and friends together over a delicious cup of coffee. They achieved this goal by opening their own franchise location for Dunn Brothers Coffee.

No hydrants? No problem

Firefighters practice moving big water

LAKE MACBRIDE– Fire hydrants.
Most towns have them strategically placed on street corners and other easily accessed locations, so firefighters can quickly find them, connect their pumpers to them and assure a steady and uninterrupted water supply.
However out in the rural areas and in towns without a municipal water system, those familiar fireplugs are nowhere to be seen.
Firefighters have utilized tank trucks, or tankers, to haul water to fire scenes for as long as there has been motorized fire apparatus.

Seussical flashes across the stage

Liberty High’s first musical plays tribute to Dr. Seuss’ works

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High School’s first musical is in the books. The show, “Seussical the Musical,” was the product of a series of books written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.
Stephen Flaherty (music) and Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) took Seuss’ works, such as “Horton Hears a Who,” “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas,” “Horton Hatches the Egg” and others, and crafted them into a musical that opened off Broadway at the Richard Rogers Theatre in New York City in 2000.

P&Z gives input on county comprehensive plan

IOWA CITY– They’ve had their say. The five-member commission requested several changes, which were dutifully noted by Planning, Development and Sustainability (PDS) staff.
