NORTH LIBERTY– The end of summer is marked with many events: the start of school, football season firing up and the closing of outdoor swimming pools. While the outdoor pool at the North Liberty Recreation Center officially closed for the season on Labor Day, dozens upon dozens of “fur kids” got in one last swim before the pool is drained until next summer.
The recreation center hosted its ninth annual Doggie Plunge on Sunday, Sept. 9, which was an opportunity for canines to swim and frolic about.

Young Solon farmer’s steer fills bellies across Johnson County

NORTH LIBERTY– For the second year, the Johnson County Farm Bureau purchased a steer at the 4-H/FFA (Future Farmers of America) auction at the Johnson County Fair. The steer was raised by 11-year-old Garrett Spevacek, son of Travis and Erinn Spevacek of rural Solon as a 4-H project. Spevacek, a member of the Graham Champions 4-H Club in Solon, raised five head of livestock in the “Advanced Feeder Pen” class and showed them at this year’s fair.

NORTH LIBERTY– A Corridor chiropractic office is broadening its reach to North Liberty. The Hiawatha-based Back in Line Family Chiropractic & Wellness opened its second location on Cameron Way on Aug. 20, at the Heat Yoga entrance.
“We wanted to expand and offer our services, and we thought North Liberty was a great place to do it,” said Dr. Missy Wessels. “The community is very up and coming with new families and we just want to be involved with that and give back to the community, and hopefully they will give back to us as well.”

CCA rolls over Fort Madison 38-0, remains unbeaten

TIFFIN– And now we are three. Three-and-oh, that is.
Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity football team remained unbeaten in the early part of the season with a 38-0 home field pounding of the Bloodhounds from Fort Madison Friday, Sept. 7.
The win improved the Clippers’ record to 3-0, a mark not seen since 2016 and for only the second time in the past decade. The Creek Boys also held onto the best showing, so far, in Class 3A District No.5 as the only unbeaten team.

A proper station for a growing department

NLPD facility to begin construction this fall

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) is finally getting a proper facility to meet its growing needs.
During an Aug. 28 meeting, the North Liberty City Council unanimously approved plans, specifications and estimated cost for the Police Department Building Project. Construction is estimated at $5 million with the use of a general obligation (GO) municipal bond, making it by far the largest project of the FY19 budget.

NLFD hosts 10th annual Salute to Summer

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Fire Department (NLFD) hosted its 10th annual “Salute to Summer” event Saturday, Aug. 18, at the fire station on Cherry Street. It was the second year for holding the event at the station, after eight years at the Scales Pointe Campground.
The NLFD ran approximately 700 calls in 2009, the first year for the event, and topped 860 the week of August 13.

5th annual Cardboard Boat Races at Scales Pointe

NORTH LIBERTY– For the fifth year, would-be nautical engineers cut, folded, shaped and taped corrugated cardboard sheets into vessels they hoped would survive a short trip in the waters of the Coralville Lake for a shot at a trophy and bragging rights.
Bobbers Grill and Scales Pointe Campground and Marina hosted its fifth annual Cardboard Boat Races on Saturday, Aug. 11, on the grounds near North Liberty with 14 entries with names on the boats including “Two Girls,” “Tweested Seasters,” “Captain America,” “Poseidon,” “Swisher Sinker,” “Vinnie” and “Jenny.”

City’s first grocery store expected to open spring 2019

TIFFIN– It’s been nearly five years since Tiffin residents put a grocery store at the top of their wish list, and last week the city came a few shovelfuls closer to reaching that dream.
On the sunny afternoon of Thursday, Aug. 23, gold shovels in hand, representatives of the City of Tiffin, Fareway Stores, Inc. and the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce broke ground together at the site of the upcoming Fareway grocery store. Located at 500 Croell Ave., the city’s first grocery store will be approximately 19,000 square feet in scale, and is expected to open its doors spring 2019.

NORTH LIBERTY– If there was ever a manifestation of community support in North Liberty, it was Friday, Aug. 17, at Penn Meadows Park.
Thanks to a barrage of volunteers and donations, hundreds of local families received a strong start to their school year during the inaugural Back 2 School Bash. The three-hour event provided a comprehensive selection of items free to the public, with long lines of families eager to take part on the sunny Friday afternoon.

NORTH LIBERTY– What do you do when chanced upon a wild animal whose life is threatened by human negligence? It’s a question recently faced by residents of Saint Andrews Drive in North Liberty.
Every day for the last five years, a flock of ducks has waddled across the yard of Dan and Ruthann Schrock, to be fed by Kay Klein. The ritual keeps the neighbors eager to greet the charming fowl as they march into the neighborhood, looking for grub. But on Tuesday, July 31, the neighbors noticed one of the ducklings exhibiting some impairment.
