Pumpkins and paintball

Zombies to infest Colony farm this fall

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s about to get creepy at the Colony Pumpkin Patch.
Well, creepy-ish.
In addition to pick-your-own pumpkins, the beloved corn maze and other kid-friendly activities, visitors to North Liberty’s local haunt will have the opportunity this Halloween season to “kill” zombies that have overrun the family farm.
“A couple years ago, friends of ours brought zombie paintball to our attention,” said Dean Colony, co-owner of the Colony Pumpkin Patch along with his wife, Katie. “We kept looking into it and finally we thought, as big as the zombie craze is, let’s do this thing.”

Back on the campaign trail

IOWA CITY– She wasn’t there for herself, but Amy Nielsen, North Liberty mayor and Iowa House District 77 hopeful, is nonetheless back on the campaign trail following a short hiatus after winning the Democratic nomination in June.
“We were kind of in first gear,” she said at a speaking event for Hillary Clinton last week. “Now we’ve gone straight to third.”

Comply now, complain later

Officers share how to have positive interactions with police

NORTH LIBERTY– While police-involved shootings and subsequent public protests continue to pop up across the country, the atmosphere was relaxed inside one of the North Liberty Community Center meeting rooms during a special forum Aug. 21 between police and citizens.
Around 40 attendees, in addition to several North Liberty Police Department staff, met over pizza and drinks at the 90-minute “town hall” style meeting Sunday evening. A panel of about six officers answered participants’ questions, which they could either ask aloud or write down on index cards.

No bus, no problem

City officials, principals collaborate on crosswalk safety

NORTH LIBERTY– For the more than 450 North Liberty elementary students without busing this school year, a special committee has a plan.
After months of meeting with principals, police officers and organizations like Safe Routes to School, the North Liberty Traffic-Safety Task Force has compiled recommendations for safer walking routes and crosswalks.

Room to “grow something”

Lowe’s donates $2,800 to renovate Penn student gardens

NORTH LIBERTY– Penn Elementary students will notice a little something different about their Grow Something garden when they return to school this month.
With help from the Lowe’s Heroes project, parent volunteers and even current Penn Panthers, the greenhouse area was transformed into a garden patio last week, complete with raised beds, new planters and two arbor entrances.

Fifth annual youth triathlon draws a crowd to North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Denise Barnhouse crouched on the edge of the indoor pool, coaching a swimmer as he struggled to finish the final 25 meters of a 100-meter swim. Cheers roared from the pool observation deck above, urging the boy on and out of the water toward the bike waiting for him outside.
His last place finish in the swim portion was irrelevant, said Barnhouse, owner of Tri-Fit Agape in North Liberty and co-director of the Just Tri! Youth Triathlon.
“It’s all about making it fun for the kids,” she said. “Once you put the competition brain on them, the fun doesn’t last long.”

Stop and sell the flowers

North Liberty woman in year one of backyard floral operation

NORTH LIBERTY– A quiet, floral oasis lies undiscovered in the heart of North Liberty but flower enthusiast Jennifer Hobbs hopes to change that.
Disturbed only by the occasional hum of a lawnmower or barking dog, Five Petal Farm is in its first official year selling fresh cut flowers, dried bouquets and more– all grown on less than an acre of urban dirt.
“There’s so much you can do with your yard instead of going out and mowing grass,” said Hobbs, who has very little lawn of her own to cut.

School board approves $1.4 million property acquisition

New elementary school on the horizon

NORTH LIBERTY– Land on the outskirts of North Liberty could be home to a new elementary as early as the 2019-2020 school year, according to Iowa City Community School District officials.
However, the construction would likely push back development at another proposed elementary location.
At its July 26 meeting, the Iowa City School Board unanimously approved the $1,403,350 purchase of 21.59 acres on the northeast side of North Liberty near South Slope Cooperative Communications and just south of the Cedar Springs subdivision. Board member Lori Roetlin was absent from the meeting.

Breathing room

North Liberty Family Health Centre moves, expands

NORTH LIBERTY– Care providers, responsible for making their patients happy and healthy, should be happy and healthy themselves, right?
The staff at North Liberty Family Health Centre (NLFHC) thought so. After 21 years at its location on West Cherry Street, owners of the independent practice decided to move into a space with, literally, a little more legroom.
“We just had staff members sitting on top of one another,” said Dr. Natalie (Tally) Hempy. “We were all getting carpal tunnel. We were always twisting to look at each other and our patients.”

Highway 965 staying alive

NORTH LIBERTY– Highway 965 isn’t going anywhere, at least not for now.
Four ideas for the highway’s renaming set forth by a city council decision in April are in the running, but city officials are having a hard time deciding what’s right for North Liberty.
“I went into this (thinking) there’s gonna be a check box and we’ll all agree, but it was tough,” said council member Jim Sayre at the July 12 council meeting.

Roesler wins Iowa City school board special election

North Liberty majority votes Claussen

IOWA CITY– Paul Roesler went from a faithful attendee to a member of the Iowa City school board last week. Voters elected him to fill a seat left vacant by former board member Tom Yates, who resigned in May.
In the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Board of Education special election July 19, Roesler emerged victorious with 2,938 votes (51 percent) over opponents J.P. Claussen and Janice Weiner. While Roesler won virtually all Iowa City precincts, Claussen took North Liberty (62 percent), Coralville (73 percent) and Hills (84 percent).
