Banding together

OXFORD– Bird nerds– they’re everywhere.
According to a 2011 survey by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, over 46 million Americans enjoy bird watching. Twenty-two percent of Iowans over the age of 16 are birders. And Johnson County is host to a thriving intergenerational and growing birding community.
Sophia Davis, who recently finished eighth grade at Northwest Junior High, was a member of the Iowa City Bird Club for four years.

Training, tech and travel

NORTH LIBERTY– Admittedly, residents of North Johnson County are rather spoiled when it comes to enjoying the area’s lakes and open waterways. Coralville Lake, the Iowa River and Lake Macbride provide easy access to freshwater fishing, boating and swimming.
But scuba diving? Here in Iowa?
Yes, it’s a thing. And, a new business in North Liberty offers all of the gear, training and travel options you need to channel your inner Jacques Cousteau.

Infuse brings fellowship and worship services to Solon

SOLON– Around 9 a.m. on the last Sunday in February, there is a flurry of activity along the corridor leading from the back entrance to the Solon Middle School.

Blue Hearts beat true

Group gives mutual support, reaches out to community

NORTH LIBERTY– “It was the Dallas mass shooting when the officers were attacked this past summer,” recalled Darci Roehler, wife of a Coralville police officer. “Four or five of us were on Facebook that night, messaging each other back and forth.”
“Unable to sleep, worried,” added Jennifer Downes, a fellow police wife and co-founder of the Blue Hearts of Johnson County. “We were just kind of seeking each other out because we understood…. We were friends, some of us for 15 years. We just kind of found solace in each other that night.”
Roehler said they were all glued to the TV.

Dudes dance, too!

Dance Spectacular 2017 features award-winning coed and all-male teams

SOLON– “Just don’t let me be the only dude out there,” said Logan Yakish when he finally agreed to join Solon’s co-ed dance team last year.
“It’s gucci!” his friends reassured him. (For the uninitiated, “gucci” is high school-ese for “cool.”)

Solon Center for the Arts wows community at open house

SOLON– The verdict is in and it’s unanimous: the Solon Community School District’s Center for the Arts is amazing.
Large numbers of community members, students and their families turned out to celebrate the official opening of the facility at an open house held on Sunday, Jan. 15. The school’s fine arts department and Solon Spotlight Music Boosters, a parent-run organization, collaborated to host the event.

Healing touch of Shiatsu massage

Susie Garton, LMT, expands 18-year practice to Solon

SOLON– Susie Garton was driving through town when she noticed something that would turn out to be the final catalyst for an idea she’d had for a couple of years.
“I saw someone was taking down the sign for Main Street Massage,” she said.

The Downtown Dachsund: From beach bucket to boutique

Melissa and Tom Reed follow entreprenurial spirit to Dows Street

ELY– “Why isn’t there a collapsible beach pail?”
Three and a half years ago, Melissa and Tom Reed’s first entrepreneurial project began with that simple question. Upon arriving at Myrtle Beach while on vacation, their son Landon looked around and said, “I want a bucket.” With no buckets to be found at the beach, they had to pack up and go into town to buy one.
When it came time to go home, Landon was very disappointed his new bucket had to be left behind.
“It created so many memories, he wanted to take it with us,” Melissa recalled.

Passing the baton

Ambition twirlers carry on “golden” tradition

IOWA CITY– Longtime Hawkeye fans remember Diana Reed as the “Golden Girl,” the baton twirler who performed with the University of Iowa (UI) Marching Band at football games and won the title of “Miss Iowa” in 2007.
Jessica Baker, 23, remembers Reed as the teacher and coach of Diana’s Golden Twirlers, the program Reed founded to offer twirling classes for an eager group of kids which included Jess and her younger sister Julia.

Cider house showcase

New Rapid Creek Cidery to showcase craft brews at Wilson’s Orchard

IOWA CITY– You might call him the Johnny Appleseed of Johnson County. Spend a little time talking apples with Paul Rasch and you easily imagine him sitting down with that iconic apple evangelist of the 19th century, quaffing hard cider and striking up a spirited conversation on the relative merits of heritage fruit trees and the ripening schedules of various cultivars.
