Blazers spoil Clippers’ season opener

Single Beckman goal topples CCA boys, 1-0

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys soccer team opened the regular season with a 1-0 loss to Dyersville Beckman Catholic High School on Monday, April 2, at home. Beckman was a Class 1A state qualifier last year, losing to Iowa City Regina in the semifinal round, and winning a consolation bracket game against Gilbert.
The Creek Boys held the Blazers at bay until three minutes before halftime, when Drew Boekholder launched a shot past Clipper keeper Blake Malli to score.
Malli, a junior, had 10 saves.

IOWA CITY– The 2018 regular (outdoor) track and field season opened Wednesday, March 28, for the Iowa City West High Women of Troy with their home meet under heavy clouds, cool temperatures and even some rain. However, West was hot on the track and in the field winning the meet, as has become tradition.
Mike Parker’s squad won a dozen events between junior varsity (JV) and varsity to win the event with 164 points, topping runner-up Cedar Rapids Prairie (139) and rival City High, which ranked third in team points.

OXFORD– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District awarded an $18,750,875 bid to Portzen Construction, Inc. of Dubuque during the regular monthly meeting of the school board of directors on Wednesday, March 21, at Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) in Oxford. The bid is for construction of the new elementary in Tiffin adjacent to Tiffin Elementary on Park Road.

OXFORD – The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District, the “Home of the Clippers,” continues to see enrollment growth, which has led to the construction of a fourth elementary school, additions to another, expansions of the high school and a fifth elementary to begin construction this year along with other projects across the district. A casual look around the district shows housing developments springing up like dandelions. And according to Rob Schwarz, it’s only going to continue.

The board reviewed the budget during a Wednesday, March 7, work session at Amana Elementary with a detailed presentation by CCA District Financial Officer Lori Robinson.

DES MOINES– Iowa City West High’s bid at a repeat state basketball title was dashed and dismantled by the Cedar Falls Tigers, 65-45, Friday, March 9, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines in the Class 4A state championship. The West High Trojans entered the state tournament as the No. 1-seeded team while the Tigers were the No. 3 seed and one of only four teams to defeat West during the regular season. Cedar Falls won, 55-54, in overtime in Cedar Falls. West’s other losses came to Dubuque Senior (68-59), Bishop Miege, Kan. (66-46) and Cretin-Durham Hall, Minn.(71-60).

IOWA CITY– In 2010, Kathy Bresnahan and her West High Women of Troy were on top of the world. The varsity volleyball team won the Class 5A state championship with a 3-0 win over Linn-Mar, a 3-1 win over Cedar Rapids Kennedy and a 3-0 win over defending champion Ankeny, the team which denied West the title a year prior. Once the trophy was safely secured in the West High trophy case, attention turned to the 2011 season and hopes for a rare championship repeat.

West High Women of Troy claim 5A hoops title with 56-45 win over City High

DES MOINES– The third time was truly the charm.
B.J. Mayer and his Iowa City West High Women of Troy claimed the 2018 Class 5A State Basketball Championship Friday, March 2, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines after knocking off crosstown rival City High, 56-45.
It was West’s sixth tournament appearance (all under Mayer) and its first championship since 2012.
Rachael Saunders, who was injured early in the 2017 season, likely spoke for her teammates after the game when she expressed her amazement at the accomplishment.
