Feedback sought on rental property zoning

NORTH LIBERTY— The North Liberty City Council is currently considering amending its zoning ordinance to address changes in state law that affect its ability to limit rental units based on family units. The council would like public feedback—from landlords, tenants and other community members—about how to address the issue. Feedback submitted with the form will be shared with city officials as they shape a zoning ordinance amendment in the coming weeks.

The issue

Join a commission to help steer North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY— Two appointed boards have three openings, and volunteers are needed to help lead and advise on those commissions.

Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment hears and decides appeals for building permit approval when a permit has been denied because of non-compliance with certain requirements of the zoning code.  This board meets only when an appeal has been filed.
Appointment is to complete a term ending June 30, 2021.  Full appointments are for a five-year term.

The plan will unite officers from North Liberty, Coralville and Johnson County law enforcement

North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY—The North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) is joining two local law enforcement agencies to create a Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). The plan will unite officers from North Liberty, Coralville and Johnson County law enforcement departments to handle emergency situations.
“This is for high-risk operations. It will be a tactical team,” explained North Liberty Police Chief Diane Venenga. “It will be making entries into homes, residents, buildings, schools when needed for hostage situations, barricaded subjects, high-risk entry on search warrants.”

A bigger and better Beat the Bitter

Registration is open for the winter event

North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– It started as a conversation between a few residents in fall 2015.
“They started talking about how Iowans are bad at doing winter,” recalled North Liberty Community Engagement Coordinator Jillian Miller. “And that people in Minnesota actually enjoy the season and go out and play winter sports, and take advantage of the snow.”

Lady Spartans stumble

S. Tama outpaces Solon, 51-47

Solon Economist
SOLON– The Lady Spartans paced the South Tama Trojans on Tuesday, Nov. 28, but fell a few steps shy in the final quarter, losing 51-47.
“I think we let the game get away due to foul trouble, not taking care of the ball, and missed free-throws,” Coach Lisa Bishop commented. “Big credit to South Tama for capitalizing on each of those mistakes.”
Solon’s starting lineup for the second game of the season included juniors Saige Hauer, Gabby Marty, Abby Smith and Erin Kerkhoff led by senior Brianna Smith.

No. 1 Marion routs Solon Women

Lady Spartans pick up second loss, 64-18

Solon Economist
MARION– On Friday, Dec. 1, the Lady Spartans found out what it is like to meet a No. 1-ranked team as they headed to Marion to face the Indians. Suffice it to say it was an eye-opening, 64-18 loss.
“I hope we can take some pride in the fact that we never gave up,” Coach Lisa Bishop said. “That Marion group has been playing together for a long time, year round. They know each other very well and have worked extremely hard on their game in the off-season. They should be rewarded and I think they will be state champs.

Wild Wrestling Win

Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty costs Raiders as Solon beats W’burg

SOLON– The Solon varsity wrestling team started its season with a doozy.
The Spartans came away from a home dual meet with Williamsburg Nov. 30 with a one-point win, 32-31, awarded to Solon on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the final match of the night.
“The Williamsburg meet was definitely one to remember,” noted Solon Head Coach Blake Williams.
The Raiders returned most of the lineup from a team that finished second in the WaMaC, Williams said, while the Spartans graduated seven seniors who amassed more than 1,000 career wins.

Lady Spartans defeat Demons at home

Solon downs Washington for 2nd win, 53-46

Solon Economist
SOLON– Solon’s Brianna Smith returned to the Lady Spartans’ home court on Saturday, Dec. 2, arguably in an effort to wash the bitter taste of the 64-18 loss to Marion the night before from every Solon fan’s memory. Shooting 5-5 from the arc, Brianna Smith led the 1-2 Lady Spartans with 22 points to a 53-46 win over the 1-2 Washington Demons while exorcizing a few from the night before on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Buzzer-beater moves Solon to 2-0

Krutzfeldt 3-pointer gives Solon the 55-54 win over Marion

SOLON– Ben Krutzfeldt’s 3-pointer at the buzzer won it for the Spartans.
Down by two in the closing seconds to Marion, The Spartans inbounded at the far end of the court to A.J. Coons who drove the ball and dished it off to Krutzfeldt for a deep three that swished the net.
Solon, down by seven points to start the fourth quarter, scored 22 points in the final period to steal away a 55-54 victory over the Indians Dec. 1 in Solon.
“Ben hit a great shot,” Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing noted. “That was set up by A.J. Coons.”
