North Liberty to host Drop-In Transportation Assistance Program Registration

NORTH LIBERTY– Earlier this fall, the City of North Liberty launched a new Transportation Assistance Program to help residents make essential quality-of-life trips. So far, it’s registered more than 60 residents for the program. Staff will host drop-in registration dates in December and January (registration is always available online and by appointment).

IOWA CITY– New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. Those planning to ring in 2020 by lighting up the night sky should familiarize themselves with fireworks laws in Johnson County.
It is illegal to set off fireworks anywhere in unincorporated areas of Johnson County without a permit. Any person intending to set off certain fireworks in the unincorporated areas of Johnson County must obtain a permit from the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. A completed application should be provided to the Board of Supervisors Office at least 14 days before the anticipated display.

American Legion Auxiliary’s Soup, Shop & Santa Event welcomes Good Old St. Nick

OXFORD– The American Legion Post 537 in Oxford hosted a very special couple on Saturday, Dec. 14, as Santa and Mrs. Claus dropped by to meet local children, and hear their Christmas wishes, dreams and hopes. The visit was part of the annual Soup, Shop & Santa event sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, with the Canopy Lodge #290 of the AF&AM Masons providing a free soup luncheon.
The jolly couple from the North Pole was delivered to the Legion Post by the Oxford Fire Department, and spent two hours at the Post.

IOWA CITY– Yourprepsports.com, a website providing prep sports coverage in Johnson and Cedar Counties in Iowa, named Solon Spartan linebacker Jax Flynn its 2019 Defensive Captain, and provided some overdue recognition of Flynn’s performance this season, while naming its 2019 Your Prep Sports Area Football Team. Fellow Spartans Carson Shive and Seamus Poynton received recognition, as well.

Spartans turn it around Saturday against CPU

SOLON– It could have been a soul-crushing loss.
But the varsity Spartan basketball team shook it off.
After watching a nine-point first-half lead evaporate, Solon fell in double-overtime to Benton Community, 57-52, in the home basketball opener Friday, Dec. 13.
And when the Spartans hosted the Stormin’ Pointers of Center Point-Urbana (CPU) the next day, they fell in a 16-0 hole before their first points hit the scoreboard in the second period.
When the final horn sounded, however, Solon emerged with a 48-46 win.

Lady Spartans break Mustangs, 60-12

Solon 2-2 on season after defeating Independence

SOLON– The Lady Spartans varsity basketball team moved to 2-2 on the season following a 60-12 breaking of the Independence Mustangs on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at home. Both Solon and Independence entered the fracas with 1-2 records but it was Independence who left the gym sadly disappointed. It was a banner night for the Lady Spartan program as the junior varsity team was also victorious earlier in the evening, 42-25.

Spartans pick up wins at South Tama duals

Solon falls to Indee, Nebraska powerhouse

TAMA– Solon’s varsity wrestlers picked up steam over the weekend at the South Tama County Duals.
The Spartan grapplers went 3-2 with big wins against Vinton-Shellsburg, Iowa City Regina and Des Moines East, and narrow losses against highly-ranked Independence and Omaha Burke of Nebraska.
“I thought our wrestlers improved with their effort and fight from Thursday (dual losses to West Delaware and Lisbon),” Solon Head Coach Blake Williams said. “In both meets we lost, we competed. We stressed that before each meet to go out and compete.”

County’s Unified Development Ordinance passes second vote

Third and final vote set for 9 a.m. Dec. 19

IOWA CITY– Johnson County’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) moved one vote closer to adoption on Thursday, Dec. 12, as the board of supervisors held the second of three considerations (votes) on the controversial measure during a regular meeting.
As with the first vote on Dec. 5, supervisors Rod Sullivan, Royce Ann Porter and Pat Heiden voted in the affirmative with supervisors Janelle Rettig and Lisa Green-Douglass in the negative for a 3-2 final tally.

New recreation director hired

Tom Harder started Dec. 16

SOLON– Solon has a new recreation director.
Tom Harder, a native of Iowa City, started the new post Dec. 16.
Harder replaces Ben Flaherty, who served in the position from September of 2018 to Nov. 7. Flaherty accepted a new job with the City of Ames.
Recreation Administrative Assistant McKenzie McIlrath served as an interim coordinator while the candidate search was underway.
According to City Administrator Cami Rasmussen, interviews were conducted in November and the position was offered and accepted by Harder.
