IOWA CITY — The Iowa City Area Association of REALTORS® (ICAAR), in partnership with the Johnson County Affordable Housing Coalition, Greater Iowa City Area Home Builders Association, and Johnson County Livable Communities for Successful Aging, hosted a successful “All About ADUs” training session on September 30 at the ICAAR Education Center.
The half-day class welcomed a strong turnout of real estate professionals, home builders, and community leaders eager to learn about Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) following the new statewide law passed in July 2025. The course provided an in-depth and educational look at how ADUs can expand affordable housing options, support multigenerational living, and increase community flexibility.
Attendees gained valuable insights, including how to understand what makes a property ADU-ready and eligible, navigate the approval process for building an ADU, analyze taxation, valuation, and financing options, and explore ADU design, permitting, and building processes such as attached, detached, and garage-conversion units. Participants also received access to resources to help clients plan for their ADU, including budget samples, contract types, and more.
The session concluded with a robust Q&A portion, giving participants the opportunity to get answers to ADU-specific questions and connect with experts in the field. Feedback from attendees highlighted the course as both highly informative and practical for professionals seeking to guide clients through this emerging housing option.
This program was made possible through a Housing Opportunities Grant from the National Association of REALTORS®.
