Season ends on the road at Benton

Lady Spartans fall 3-1 to Bobcats in regional

VAN HORNE– It was too much Abby Brunssen.
The Benton Community senior, a unanimous First Team All-WaMaC Conference selection, carried the Bobcats to a 3-1 win over Solon’s varsity volleyball squad in a Class 3A Region 6 quarterfinal Oct. 23 in Van Horne.
“Abby was definitely the difference in the game,” said Solon Head Coach Sarah Ferin. “She went over us, and converted every free ball– credit to her player of the year title for sure.”
Brunssen powered her team with 37 kills.
Solon countered with defense, recording 15 blocks for the game.

On to state! Solon girls win XC regional

SOLON– It was a tight finish.
However, with all five scoring runners in the top 20, Solon’s girls punched their ticket to state. Next stop? The starting line, Kennedy Park, Fort Dodge; noon, Saturday, at the Class 3A state cross country meet.

Spartans dominate Fairfield, 54-6, claim district title

After 9-0 season, Solon hosts Liberty Nov. 1 in first round

FAIRFIELD– The Solon Spartans completed another perfect regular season on Friday, Oct. 25, with a 54-6 win over the Fairfield Trojans to claim the 2019 Class 3A District 6 championship.
The win sets up a Friday, Nov. 1, match up at Spartan Stadium between the Liberty Lightning and the Solon Spartans in the opening round of the postseason starting at 7 p.m.
After building a 33-0 lead in the first half against the Trojans, the Spartans bolstered another 21 points in the second half, defeating Fairfield in a lopsided affair.

Courage Ride raises $100,000 for Sarcoma Cancer Research at the University of Iowa

IOWA CITY– Courage Ride, a bicycle ride raising funds for Sarcoma Cancer research, presented a check for $100,000 to the University of Iowa’s Sarcoma Research Program during an Oct. 23 ceremony at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Ben Millr and Dr. Munir Tanas accepted the check on behalf of the center’s Sarcoma Cancer Research Program.
Over the past 15 years, Courage Ride has raised over $610,000 for Sarcoma Cancer research– having a major impact on cancer patients and families who benefit from the research.

Haunted Happenings fill NL’s Rec Center with Halloween family fun

NORTH LIBERTY– For two evenings, part of the North Liberty Recreation Center was turned into a hall of Halloween havoc as the City of North Liberty and the North Liberty Optimist Club sponsored their annual Haunted Happenings. Families took part in a variety of Halloween-themed games and activities on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 24 and 25.
Set up for the event started on Monday, Oct. 21, and wrapped up at 5 p.m. on Thursday, an hour-and-a-half before the doors opened. Between 300-500 kids and their parents/grandparents/guardians were expected each night.

SWISHER– A Knight in shining armor, skeletons in a stable, kids in costumes and friendly horses were all in the spotlight Saturday, Oct. 26, as Miracles in Motion hosted its third “Boo at the Barn” Halloween event at its facility near Swisher.

City to sell land next to City Hall

SOLON– The property next to Solon City Hall is for sale.
A developer approached the city with a plan to build a two-story mixed-use building on the former residential lot, and the city has given other interested parties until the morning of Nov. 19 to submit alternate plans.
At an Oct. 16 meeting, council members approved resolution 19-46, setting a Nov. 20 public hearing on the disposal of 120 W. Main Street, a property acquired by the city along with the current city hall site.

Recreation Department trunk or treat at SRNA

SOLON– The rain went away just in time.
The Solon Recreation Department hosted its first-ever trunk or treat in the parking lot outside the Timber DOME Lodge at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Eleven vehicles representing local businesses and organizations handed out candy to a parade of children wearing costumes.
Solon Recreation Administrative Assistant McKenzie McIlrath said an estimated 170 people attended and she hopes it will become an annual event.

Zombie face painting at the library

SOLON– It isn’t often you hear teenagers asking for head wounds.
But such calls were frequent at the Solon Public Library Oct. 10 as the organizer of the Iowa City Zombie March visited for a workshop on appearing undead.
Joshua Christain taught about a dozen Solon teenagers how to make their face paler and to darken their cheekbones and under their eyes as part of the library’s weekly Creative, Amazing Teens (C.A.T.S.) program for fifth through 12th graders.
