P&Z Commission makes its concerns with the UDO known

IOWA CITY– A number of items related to agriculture, in general, and animal agriculture, in particular, in the proposed Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) for Johnson County has brought forth a firestorm of criticism from the agricultural community.
During a Sept. 9 public hearing, conducted by the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z), 20 spoke in objection to parts of Chapter 8 of the document, which has been in development since July 2018 as a follow up to the county’s comprehensive plan.

Council OKs expanded safety training

Solon to join cost-share for regional coordinator

SOLON– It’s time to enhance safety training for city employees.
At an Oct. 16 meeting, Solon City Council members gave informal approval to join a pool of regional communities looking to hire a full-time safety instructor.
Currently, public works employees receive Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training through the Eastern Iowa Area Safety and Support Organization (EIASSO).

Liberty Boys are state XC bound

Bolts’ runners are the first team in school history to make it to state

MARSHALLTOWN– Another piece of Liberty High School history was made Thursday, Oct. 24, as the varsity boys cross country team earned a place on the starting line of the 2019 Class 4A state meet in Fort Dodge on Saturday, Nov. 2.
The Bolts finished third in team points in a district (state qualifying) meet at the Marshalltown Community College course behind champion (and Mississippi Valley Conference rival) Cedar Rapids Prairie, and runner-up Johnston.

Creek Boys return to state XC with their first district title

District championship for Brandon Barker is a CCA first

SOLON– History was made for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys cross country team Thursday, Oct. 24, at its Class 3A District (state qualifying) Meet, which was held in at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
The Clippers won the district championship and advanced as a team to the 2019 state meet on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Kennedy Park in Fort Dodge. The Creek Boys were the runner-up team last year, their highest finish to date. This will be CCA’s fifth state-qualifying team in the history of the program, and is their third district title.

Five Creek Girls earn WaMaC volleyball honors

Bunch and Clubb are unanimous 1st Team West Division picks

TIFFIN– Five Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball players have received WaMaC All-Conference honors.
Cheyaenne Bunch, Calia Clubb, Hailey Pollock, Emily Sly and Gabrielle Bedford were named to West Division teams for their efforts for the Clippers during the regular season. The WaMaC East and West lists were released on Thursday, Oct. 24.
Bunch and Clubb were unanimous selections to the First Team, Pollock was a Second Team pick, while Sly and Bedford received WaMaC Recognition (formerly Honorable Mention).

Keeney returns to state cross country with district championship

Liberty High sophomore leads a Lightning trio to Fort Dodge

MARSHALLTOWN– Ashlyn Keeney is headed back to the state cross country meet.
Keeney finished 72nd in last year’s meet as a freshman and was Liberty High School’s only Bolt to qualify. This year, the speedy sophomore will lead a trio of Bolts after placing fourth in a Class 4A district (state qualifying) meet Thursday, Oct. 24, in Marshalltown. Keeney won the district championship with a time of 17:58.4, beating runner-up Emily Naughton, of Indianola, who finished in 18:20.9.

Creek Boys end the season with win over Sabers

CCA holds off Central DeWitt for 35-21 win on Senior Night

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity football team closed out the 2019 season with a 35-21 win over the Sabers of Central Clinton, DeWitt at home on Friday, Oct. 25. It was Senior Night for the Clippers with Kaden Gisleson, Andrew Swails, Nick Gerard, Sam Stevens, J.J. Denny, Grant Jensen, Andrew King, Sam Noska, Zane Cunningham, Tanner Webb, Xavi Hernandez, Thomas Macumber, Kyle Pitlick, Eric Zierke, Landon Schanz, Grant Haman, Lucas Tenhagen and Gabe Jenn recognized for their contributions to the program.

Hinman back to state

Boys fifth at state qualifier

SOLON– For Solon sophomore Gabe Hinman, it’ll be another afternoon on the links. But not for golf. He joins more than 100 other runners… and a couple thousand screaming, mobile fans at Kennedy Park Golf Course Saturday, Nov. 2, for the 2019 Iowa State High School Cross Country Meet.
Finishing 11th at Solon’s Oct. 24 Class 3A qualifying meet, Hinman will be in a starting box, 12:30 p.m., in Fort Dodge. He will be one of a couple dozen individual runners, in the 3A race. He also qualified a year ago, as a freshman, finishing 46th.
