A big change for Clipper cross country this year

2020 CCA high school cross country preview

TIFFIN– In 2015, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School cross country program split with then-assistant coach Ben Robison taking the helm of the boys program, while head coach Jane Astor led the girls teams.
Now, everything old is new again as the programs have recombined with Robison leading the way for both the boys’ and girls’ programs.
Robison, in his 12th year of coaching at CCA, has Megan Miller and Paige O’Brien as assistant coaches, and the legendary Jim White as an assistant and the program’s mental performance coach.

Clipper football focuses on the present ahead of an uncertain season

TIFFIN– Student athletes, their families and coaches watched as the 2020 spring sports season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis.
They held a collective breath as summer baseball and softball were allowed to proceed, albeit in a shortened season, which did see some teams benched due to positive infection testing.
With the green light from the state and the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), there will be a 2020 high school football season. As with the summer sports however, it will look a little different.

TIFFIN– Each year, Southeast district and Iowa Future Farmers of America (FFA) officers plan and facilitate Chapter Officer Leadership Training (COLT) Conferences for FFA members in the Southeast district. Clear Creek Amana welcomed FFA chapters from all over the Southeast district on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

DNR continues to assess damage

DES MOINES– Lake Macbride and several other nearby state parks have been closed indefinitely as the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continues to assess damage caused by a widespread derecho Monday, Aug. 10.
The inland hurricane, sporting winds in excess of 100 miles per hour, struck a large portion of Iowa and left several state parks with significant damage.
Lake Macbride State Park in Johnson County and Palisades-Kepler State Park and Pleasant Creek State Recreation Area in Linn County are completely closed until further notice due to unsafe conditions.

Picking up the pieces

Neighbors unite to clear storm damage Most power restored before weekend Take debris to SRNA

SOLON– Public Works Director Scott Kleppe had about a half hour warning.
But even then, the alert was for a line of severe thunderstorms producing winds up to 70 miles per hour (mph).
It was about noon and his staff just went home for lunch.
Kleppe contacted Central Cable, the contractor for South Slope Communication Cooperative’s fiber overbuild, and provided a warning for high winds.
By the time he finished a quick lunch, the storm arrived.
The city has no instruments to measure wind speed.

NORTH LIBERTY– Council member Raquisha Harrington summed it up during an Aug. 11 meeting.
“2020 has not been nice to anyone at all,” she observed.
Harrington was echoing comments from other North Liberty City Council members who voiced support for city employees after an inland hurricane known as a derecho tore a path across the state and into Illinois Monday, Aug. 11, leaving hundreds of thousands without power for days.
Power was restored to most North Liberty residents by Tuesday afternoon, allowing council members to continue with a regularly scheduled virtual meeting.

What to do with tree limbs and bulky debris

NORTH LIBERTY– Monday’s storm created a tremendous amount of debris and cleanup will be a lengthy process. City crews will begin picking up tree limbs from curbs Aug. 11, and a debris site has been established for residents who are able to haul their own limbs down.
Tree limbs can be piled between the street and sidewalk. Please place them parallel to the curb in sections of 10 feet or less and take care not to push trees and limbs into the street. City crews will start picking up as early as possible.
