Wilson’s Orchard and Farm opens farm market, bakery, cidery and strawberry patches for U-pick and pre-picked fruit sales

IOWA CITY– Wilson’s Orchard and Farm opened for its first-ever summer season on Saturday, June 20. Despite a late frost in May, the strawberry plants flourished. This year, Wilson’s will harvest its first crop of strawberries.
The addition of strawberries to the farm is part of an effort to further diversify the crops and products, allowing the business to extend the season to six months, from June through December. It also means providing a wider variety of locally grown produce to our community.

No Beef Days

Solon’s annual celebration limited to socially distant events Buy your Beef Days Bundles starting July 1

SOLON– “Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our traditional 2020 Solon Beef Days events,” the Facebook post said.
With that, Solon’s Beef Days Committee announced on June 16 what many suspected.
“This decision did not come easy, but after careful consideration and conversations with city officials and local health agencies we have decided that Beef Days could not go on like normal under the current social distancing guidelines and other restrictions set forth for our state,” the post continued.

Spartans topple Fairfield in home opener Solon begins season with split at West Delaware

SOLON– Fans welcomed Solon’s varsity baseball team back to the diamond June 17 for a home opener against the Fairfield Trojans.
The Spartans made the most of six hits and five walks for a 9-3 win.
The victory moved Solon to 2-1 after starting the season with a doubleheader split with West Delaware June 15.
Junior Brayden Rickertson threw 4 1/3 innings on the mound, giving up four hits and two unearned runs while striking out four and walking three. Senior Sully Steen pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up an unearned run and a hit.

Lady Spartans on a six-game tear Solon sweeps home opener against CPU

SOLON– There’s nothing like home cooking.
After dropping the first two games of a condensed season at West Delaware June 15, Solon High School’s varsity softball team returned to the friendly confines at home and promptly erased the opening day memory with six straight double-digit wins.
The Lady Spartans opened the home stand with a doubleheader against Center Point-Urbana (CPU) June 17, rolling up 11-1 and 12-0 victories. On Friday, June 19, Solon swept Maquoketa 15-3 and 10-0, and at a weekend triangular Saturday, June 20, the Lady Spartans lapped Union Community 12-2 and Durant 12-0.

Solon takes two from CPU Three wins in a row for Spartans

SOLON– The bats came alive against the Stormin’ Pointers.
Solon High School’s varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader from Center Point-Urbana (CPU) 10-1 and 13-3 at home June 18.
The Spartan pitchers allowed only four hits and a single earned run in the opener, while Solon’s offense knocked 14 hits, including three doubles.
The Spartans put up two runs in the bottom of the first, but broke open the game with six in the fourth inning, sandwiched by single runs in the third and fifth.

Splash pad back in sight

City prepares to absorb rising costs Hoping for summer 2021 opening

SOLON– The City of Solon would like to get its splash pad into the ground, but there are still costs up in the air.
It’s been a long time on the drawing board for the city’s first water park, but city officials hope to pull the project together and start construction in earnest yet this year.
At a special meeting June 10, city council members authorized a $64,518.45 down payment to Vortex Aquatic Structures International for the splash pad’s structures and recirculation equipment.
The total cost of the materials will be $215,061.50, including delivery.

5th Street intersection closed through mid-July for signal project Council updated on current projects

SOLON– It will be mid-July before the intersection of Highway 1 and 5th Street opens back up.
Eastbound through traffic on 5th Street has been diverted around construction of a traffic signal, and paving is scheduled for July 13-14, according to City Engineer Dave Schechinger.
During a June 17 city council meeting, Schechinger said crews are currently working on sewer and sub-drain, with subgrade scheduled for the following week. The work is expected to increase the intersection’s radius, widening the southeast corner by about 10 feet.

Liberty pulls off 8-7 win in extra innings, but falls 17-1 in nightcap

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s varsity softball team put up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion Thursday, June 18, with a sweep over No. 2 Iowa City High. The unranked Lightning overcame a 7-6 deficit in the 10th inning of game one of a doubleheader with two runs to pull out an 8-7 win in the first game played on their new diamond.

Liberty baseball holds off a late attack from CR Wash for an 11-8 win

NORTH LIBERTY– Liberty High’s first varsity game on its new diamond was almost marred by defeat as the Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors erased an 8-1 deficit Thursday, June 18. The Bolts opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and followed with one in the third, and two in the fourth before the Warriors scored one run in the top of the fifth. The Lightning added three more in the bottom half of the fifth, and looked to be cruising toward the win.

IOWA CITY– The Liberty High varsity baseball team opened the shortened 2020 season on Tuesday, June 16, placing a big feather in their caps as they knocked off Iowa City High, 2-0, on the Little Hawks’ diamond in Mercer Park.
