Teen motivates Iowa City area climate activists

IOWA CITY– Swedish teen Greta Thunberg urged 3,000 climate advocates in downtown Iowa City to take on the worldwide crisis… before it is too late.
She shared a makeshift stage at Dubuque and Iowa Streets with local students who have been “climate striking” each Friday for months. The 16-year-old has made international headlines over the last couple months, including her solar-powered boat voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to speak at the United Nations climate summit a couple weeks ago.

Looking out for wildlife

NL Scout Dominick Shover takes on a crusade against discarded fishing line

NORTH LIBERTY– According to Dr. Ellen K. Rudolph on her blog Portfolio (www.drellenrudolph.com), “Monofilament fishing line is by far the most dangerous kind of debris encountered by wildlife.” Fishing line (often cut and left in place after getting snagged and tangled in shoreline trees, shrubs or underwater debris) often entangles and kills birds, fish, turtles, frogs and other small mammals, sometimes even injuring or killing pets. Hooks attached to the line can injure or kill as well, especially if the animal swallows it.

Pack moving up; XC boys 4th at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG– Solon’s boys showed up with a pack of runners in the top 30 this time. Still, top ranked (Class 2A) Tipton held court, with its five scorers going one-three-five-10-11, and its remaining two varsity runners 12th and 14th, to blow away the field in the Oct. 1 Williamsburg Invitational cross country meet.

Third place, but what a finish for Lady Spartan XC

WILLIAMSBURG– The rankings proved true. Mid-Prairie and Williamsburg were one-two among Class 2A teams, as rated by the state’s cross country coaches. And they finished right there, at the Oct. 1 Williamsburg Invite. Solon, ranked ninth in Class 3A, was third in the 10-team field, on a hot sultry afternoon, with thunderstorms just a few hours away.
“This meet was a tough one,” observed head coach Emy Williams. “The humidity and new course layout didn't help our times. We ran well and will start getting our legs fresh as we close in on conference and the state qualifying meet.”
