County’s Unified Development Ordinance passes second vote

Third and final vote set for 9 a.m. Dec. 19

IOWA CITY– Johnson County’s Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) moved one vote closer to adoption on Thursday, Dec. 12, as the board of supervisors held the second of three considerations (votes) on the controversial measure during a regular meeting.
As with the first vote on Dec. 5, supervisors Rod Sullivan, Royce Ann Porter and Pat Heiden voted in the affirmative with supervisors Janelle Rettig and Lisa Green-Douglass in the negative for a 3-2 final tally.

New recreation director hired

Tom Harder started Dec. 16

SOLON– Solon has a new recreation director.
Tom Harder, a native of Iowa City, started the new post Dec. 16.
Harder replaces Ben Flaherty, who served in the position from September of 2018 to Nov. 7. Flaherty accepted a new job with the City of Ames.
Recreation Administrative Assistant McKenzie McIlrath served as an interim coordinator while the candidate search was underway.
According to City Administrator Cami Rasmussen, interviews were conducted in November and the position was offered and accepted by Harder.

Saving Santa

Helen Proffitt restores Golden Age department store Santa Santa’s Kitchen display featured at tree walk

SOLON– It was the year Helen Proffitt saved Santa.
Proffitt, of rural Solon, spent several months restoring a 5-foot 1961 Harold Gale Santa Company Santa for display at Solon’s annual tree walk Dec. 7.
The Santa figure, along with two elves, were featured in a three-walled Santa’s Kitchen in a corner of the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center, along with hundreds of other donated items.
Many of those, including Santa and the elves, came from the collection of Toni Russo of Solon.

Creek Girls fall to Sabers

Stratton leads CCA with 21 points in 52-47 loss

DEWITT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls dipped to 1-1 on the season with a 52-47 loss to the Sabers of Central Clinton-DeWitt on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
The Clippers trailed, 10-5, at the end of the first quarter and continued to trail, 21-16, at halftime. A 14-point third period helped the Creek Girls’ cause leading to a slim, 30-29, advantage going into the final quarter. However, the Sabers outscored the Clippers, 23-17, in the period for the win.

Trojan-Bolts dunk the Tigers

Liberty’s Hajek, Nichols and Keeney post wins in West High swimming victory over Cedar Falls

CORALVILLE– The Iowa City West High boys swimming team notched yet another victory Tuesday, Dec. 3, dunking the Cedar Falls Tigers at the Coralville Recreation Center. The combined West High/Liberty High squad took the varsity meet, 133-37, and the junior varsity (JV) meet, 131-35.
Liberty High swimmers Izaak Hajek, Luke Nichols and Gavin Keeney won in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively. Hajek (a senior) won in 22.19 seconds, Nichols (a junior) won in 49.38 seconds and Keeney (a sophomore) won in 1:04.77.

Bolts fall in season opener to the Wahawks

Morris and Terwilleger led Liberty in 72-8 loss to Wahawks

NORTH LIBERTY– The Liberty High grapplers opened the 2019-20 season with a 72-8 loss to the Waterloo West Wahawks, at home, on Thursday, Dec. 5.
Jaxon Morris, a freshman, put the Lightning on the scoreboard with an 8-2 decision over West High junior Reese Talaska. Sophomore Elijah Terwilleger won a 16-0 technical fall in 4:25 over West High sophomore Michael Tatum.
The Bolts forfeited at 106, 113, 170, 182, 195 and 220 pounds.

Liberty boys open the season with 74-50 win in Washington

WASHINGTON– The Liberty High varsity boys’ basketball team opened the 2019-20 season with a 74-50 non-conference win over the Washington Demons Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Washington.
The Lightning jumped out to a 29-10 lead at the end of the first period and held a commanding lead, 43-23, at halftime. The Bolts continued the onslaught in the second half with a 62-32 advantage going into the final quarter.
Junior Ira Hazeltine led Liberty with 21 points including six three-pointers. Senior Andre Brandon put in 14 points with a dozen from junior Kelby Telander.

Creek Boys come up short in season opener

Central DeWitt tops CCA, 75-70

DEWITT– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys came up a little short in their basketball season opener Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Central Clinton, DeWitt. The Sabers topped the Clippers, 75-70.
The Creek Boys dominated the first quarter with a 21-13 lead, but the Sabers roared back in the second leaving CCA hanging onto a one-point advantage, 32-31, at halftime. DeWitt pulled ahead in the third with a 52-51 lead going into the final quarter.

Johnson County Supervisors approve controversial plan, 3-2

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors are on track to achieving a major goal for 2019: passing the updated Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), and having it in place to go into effect on January 1, 2020.
The 299-page document, which codifies the county’s comprehensive plan, was approved on a 3-2 vote in the first of three required readings Thursday, Dec. 5, during a regular meeting of the supervisors.

One-act drama runs Friday and Saturday

NORTH LIBERTY– Kyle McManus has a problem. He is an art collector who invested millions in 15 high-tech androids programed to perform thousands of movements, monologues, dialogues and more. He’d like to sell them but a serious malfunction has arisen; they’ve come alive. The sculptures’ struggle to become autonomous, coupled with his desire to destroy them is played out in the one-act drama “Property Rites,” by Alan Haehnel.
