Bowling season opens with The Battle for the King and Queen Pins

IOWA CITY– Iowa City West High and Iowa City, City High opened the 2019-20 bowling season with the annual crosstown rivalry match on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City. The Trojans and Little Hawks battle each year for the King and Queen Pins, and this year City High prevailed as its varsity boys and varsity girls defeated the Trojans.

Creek Girls open season with a win over rival Lady Spartans

Stratton’s 31 points leads CCA over Solon, 58-43

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity girls basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a 58-43 win over WaMaC East rival Solon at home on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Clippers won the first period 11-6 after pulling ahead from a 6-6 tie with the Lady Spartans, and powered ahead in the second to a 28-13 halftime advantage. Senior Meagan Harvey sank a long-range three-point basket, which put the Creek Girls up 17-12 in the second period, while senior Karsyn Stratton finished the half with a rebound and a basket. Stratton went on to lead all scorers with a 31-point performance.

Two Creek Girls earn more volleyball honors

IGCA names All-State teams

NORTH LIBERTY– The Iowa Girls Coaches Association (IGCA) recently released its picks for 2019’s volleyball Senior All-Stars, All-District Teams and All-State Teams with two Clear Creek Amana (CCA) athletes honored.
CCA’s Calia Clubb and Cheyaenne Bunch were named to the Class 4A SE District team. Clubb is a sophomore, who also earned 4A All-State Honorable Mention, while Bunch is a senior. Bunch recently signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Concordia College in Seward, Neb. She was also a unanimous WaMaC Conference First Team pick.

It’s wait and see for farmers on the UDO’s final wording

P&Z makes 16 recommendations, supervisors set Dec. 5 for public hearing

IOWA CITY– The Johnson County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Thursday, Dec. 5, regarding the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO), a document which codifies the Comprehensive Land Use Plan the Supervisors approved in 2018. Work began on the UDO soon after with over 1,000 man-hours spent by the county’s Planning, Development, and Sustainability department (PDS) crafting it.

Iowa icon Carson King helps out the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, again

TIFFIN– On Sept. 14, a new Iowa icon was created. Cable sports network ESPN’s Game Day program was in Ames for the University of Iowa (UI) versus Iowa State University football game when their cameras picked up a young man named Carson King holding a cardboard sign seeking beer money. What started as a joke quickly escalated into a serious fundraiser as thousands of people from across the country responded.

Archie’s Rent-A-Ride meets NL’s temporary transportation needs

NORTH LIBERTY– Many small businesses were started by entrepreneurs who saw a need that wasn’t being met locally. Such is the case with Archie’s Rent-A-Ride in North Liberty. Since July, Ron and Kris Mace have been providing top-notch rental cars as an offshoot of their repair shop, Archie’s Brake & Quick Lube.

CCA clips Lady Spartans, 58-43, in season opener on road

Lady Spartans basketball, young but experienced

TIFFIN– Lady Spartan Basketball Head Coach Jamie Smith, in his second season, is going to lean on the entire team, following a 3-18 showing last season.
“I think they all hold leadership capabilities,” Coach Smith commented.
Solon returns letter winners sophomores Makinley Levin (5-9), Kaia Holtkamp (5-7), Ava Stebral, (5-5), Jada Buffington (5-7), Emma Bock (5-6) and Elly Holubar (5-7). The lone returning senior is Jenna LaDage (5-9).
Newcomers to the varsity roster this season include senior Aira Foster (5-8), freshmen Hillary Wilson, (5-6) and Claire LaDage (5-8).

Four Spartan football players named All-State First Team selections

Cam-Coons Connection named to All-State First Team Offense with Broghammer, Andregg named to First Team Defense

DES MOINES– The Iowa Print Sports Writers Association (IPSWA), founded in February of 2018, named its All-State Team selections for Iowa High School Football.
Cam Miller, A.J. Coons, Michael Broghammer and Jace Andregg were named for their performances catapulting the Spartans to the Class 3A championship game against the Western Dubuque Bobcats earning them the state runner-up title and a 12-1 season record.

Six lanes for I-380? Yes, they will IDOT lays out plans for increasing traffic with additional lanes

NORTH LIBERTY– If you’ve grown sick of seeing the orange cones, “Jersey barriers,” and tall cranes at the Interstates 80 and 380 interchange, once that massive project is done, construction will move roughly four miles to the north.
And start a new multi-year project.
